Anyone else have similar suspicions ?
They will not be walking to school in 115 degree heat. In the mornings is is well below 100 degrees.
Summer vacations used to happen because the children were needed on the farm during the summer. Then it became a national tradition.
However, Arizona may well have the best School Choice legislation in the United States. Motivated parents do not have their children trapped in the public school system.
In the south, June tends to be hot also. So choosing to start school in Sep and ending mid June may be worse.
Fortunately, the kids have AC classrooms. When I went to school, they did not.
Probably since Arizona has been doing this since the 1930s.
some schools already started in indiana. its ridiculous.
When I was young, school didn’t start back until after Labor Day. They began gradually creeping it further and further back until it now starts in late July in our area.
My suspicion is that it has to do with a change in culture. In my day and time, the husband was the primary bread winner, and the wife often stayed home with the kids. Now two bread winners are needed to make ends meet. So, most families can’t afford to pay for child care for 3 months or more, so they have curbed things back to five or six weeks.
Time it was, and what a time it was, it was...
A time of innocence.
A time of confidences.
Long ago it must be
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They’re all that’s left you.
Once upon a time, school was a place to learn reading, writing, arithmetic, and American history.
In the pre-liberal age we started the day AzFTER Labor Day and school year ended last weekday before Memorial Day.
Schools in Missouri typically start in August; second or third week. There was a move by the people in tourist areas wanting to require schools to wait until after Labor Day to start and the legislature obliged. But they included an agricultural loophole. After a few years the majority of districts in all but the most urban areas claimed it. I believe the requirement was repealed.
On the other hand, summer vacation usually starts in mid-May.
It is satisfy the teachers for Spring break week, Thanksgiving week, Christmas 3 weeks, and other assorted 4-5 day weekends, teachers conferences, teachers CEUs etc.
Used not to start until after Labor Day.
Pricks... “professionals” got involved.
From what I see around here, kids won’t be walking at all, regardless of the temperature. Their parents will give them a ride to the school or bus stop and the kids will sit in the car’s A/C until the bus comes or the school doors open. I wonder how much time and fuel is used for this each day.
Now when I was a boy, by golly, things were different...
School is over in mid-May. When I was a kid (PA), school started in early September, was over in early to mid-June, depending on snow days. So the summer break is about the same length. There is outdoor recess.
1) Teachers want their SUMMER VACATION for as long as possible.
2) The commie indoctrination system wants CONTROL OF YOUR CHILDREN for as long as possible.
Option 1 takes a back seat to Option 2.
They may be year round schools. They don’t get the three months in a row off like we used to. They get three or four breaks a year for a few weeks instead. And they are strange schedules.
And there are “Teacher in service” days. Where the kids do not go to school but the teachers get paid to go to school without kids. This steals days from the kids longer breaks because they are still required to go a certain number of days a year.
I have 12 Grandkids, and they all go to different schools with different schedules. It is a complete mess... A family can hardly make any vacation plans at all and still have all the kids go at once. I think it is a conspiracy to break up family union.
All part of turning the population into drones, so they know nothing but work.
“Why is school starting next week with heat warnings in effect in AZ and many southern states ?”
School buses, classrooms, and cars all have air conditioning, at least until the Left gets power again. So hard to see a problem with their schedule.
Many SC schools are already in session. More and longer breaks during the traditional school year. Also some districts are going to a modified year round schedule. Nine weeks in class, three weeks off with extended Christmas break. Apparently the kids do better with knowledge retention.
More likely it’s the testing schedule that is used to determine school start and breaks.
My kid’s school starts on Wednesday.
They start earlier but they also get longer breaks during the school year.
A week fall break, a week at Thanksgiving, three weeks at Christmas and a week in the spring.
I remember late August back in the 80s and I wanted to get back to my friends at school again. But we had very short breaks during the year.
Because they get out almost a month before schools in other places in the country.
Growing seasons start earlier deeper south.
