Progress report: all slate off the front of the house. Not one spot/piece of rotten wood was found - woo hoo! The back slates look like they are in better shape so wood underneath should be at least as good (fingers crossed). They’ll tackle the back tomorrow.

They found the leak spot, new roof will fix that spot.

Going well enough they could finish Friday.

You’re going to LOVE that tomato. I grow both heirloom and hybrid varieties. I’m all about production, Baby!

You have YEARS of this stuff ahead of you with Howard - so get used to it, LOL!

Yeah, that was the quickest bear chase in the history of hunting, for sure.

Yesterday he was hunting The Young Dogs. Today he is taking four relatively UNTRAINED dogs along with three of our very polished older dogs to see if he can help the owner of the UNTRAINED dogs with their usefulness in life.

I don’t like days like this! These situations can result in mistakes - big, small or tragic. Fingers crossed that there are no Porkies around the hunting grounds today, too!

If you have the time and upper body strength for all of the chopping, Giardiniera (Italian Pickled Vegetables) is a very satisfying and tasty product.

As I have mentioned (probably ad nauseum by now), we are going to be swamped with visitors this Fall. We learned a lesson when my cousin from FL & his wife visited about a month ago. They both are ‘gluten free’, which we did not know when we planned food for the visit. Mom had cinnamon rolls to go with coffee, there were buns for BBQ & cheesecake for dessert - they couldn’t eat any of it. Fortunately, they could eat BBQ, Cole slaw & potato salad so they didn’t go hungry.

I told mom to ask the couple coming the 9th if there were any dietary restrictions, such as gluten free, since we are providing lunch. Sure enough, the lady is gluten free. We will probably do BBQ again & get gluten free rolls. I just looked up gluten free desserts , found two - will probably do the little cheesecakes in jars (if I can find certified gluten free graham crackers).... so cute! These are Sally’s Baking Addiction recipes so I know they’ll be good:

No-Bake Cheesecake Jars

Blueberry Sauce Topping (looks great for cheesecake jars)
https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/blueberry-sauce-topping/

Gluten Free Apple Crisp

We will be asking about dietary restrictions going forward if we are providing the food for guests.

I’ve always liked this song for some reason:

Lawyers, Guns & Money - Warren Zevon

Another good one by Zevon - it’s been a long time since I heard either of these songs

I’m already craving it...lol. I love my homegrown tomatoes and that one looks really good. Thank you for the heads up on those seeds! I’ll keep that site on my list for future orders, too.

How did they compare to sabres? Size, taste, more flesh less seeds? Inquiring minds want to know. I would plant only one of them next year.

On the kombucha, I got my scoby pancake from someone locally. They grow so there are always people willing to peel off a pancake to give or sell. I always used sencha green tea which I drink anyway. But you can use any kind of tea. Sometimes I would add a fruit tea bag. A big olive jar works great for a scoby pancake on top of the tea. Make the tea first on the counter the day before. so you can remove the tea bags before you add the scoby.

Wow, those LOOK just like my Abe Lincoln’s. How similar the taste is, I don’t know. I don’t think I should give a final judgement on the Abe Lincolns until I get some fruits from this better weather spell. :-)

PS Diana, I can also tell having made both kefir and kombucha that brewing kefir is much easier and I always have used A2 milk.

Chile is a great Fall dish & it’s beginning to feel a lot like Fall around here! Weather is SO good, I suspect Mother Nature is going to pull the rug out from under us & inflict another very warm summer-like spell sometime in September.

Yep, forecast has us back up to mid 80s for Labor Day. Works for me since I want to run the smoker. Store has pork ribs for $2/lb, wild Alaskan salmon for $7/lb, Tri Tip $9/lb.

They also have beef chunks for stew and ground beef on sale so chile might be on the menu soon. That reminds me, I need a new Dutch Oven.

We put together a Family Recipe Cookbook. A BIL added his Venison Stew recipe.

The first line was, “If you are a hunter who was unlucky in the field this season, stop reading right now. This will only depress you further.”

I laugh every time I thumb through that cookbook. :)

I’ll have to tell you next season - the chippies destroyed ALL the Sabres (4) that I started. It was too late to start more.

I should’ve taken that as a SIGN as to what this season was going to be like all the way around, LOL!

I will start/hopefully grow both Sabelka and Sabre next season.

I did get even MORE green beans picked today and I found at least 20 usable tomatoes and a few more bell peppers for another double batch of Salsa, as well as ‘Chef’s Choice Black’ and more of the ‘Harvard Square’ for slicing and BLTs this weekend. The lone ‘Cherokee Purple’ has perfect fruit and perfect foliage, but is still rock-hard and green right now. The SECOND I see her ‘blushing at the shoulders’ I’m picking them all for ripening inside!

Weather here is cooler than cool (60’s and 70’s in August?!?) and only random showers in the forecast. They’ve done the forth (and final) cutting of alfalfa hay and Junior Farmer Ryan was just through with the hay tedder (fluffer) so they should be bailing tomorrow.

All of the field crops look fantastic this season which bodes well for all the dairy cows in the ‘hood! :)

Thanks, Mom! Kefir is another thing I want to try as well as more complex cheeses - I have made the soft cheeses and butter. Easy Peasy.
