Black Sabbath, and the genre they did so much to define, made music that was safe for people who felt like they were outside. Depressed kids, angry kids, socially awkward kids. By the sheer accident of having the primary lyricist (Geezer Butler) being clinically depressed and choose as a band to explore the dark side (which is kind of why the the depressed guy became the primary writer) they made the those who felt alone feel not alone. A constant you hear in 2nd generation and beyond metal acts is “I was suicidal until...”, and many metal fans that did not become have the same story. They found the music, and then they found other fans, and then they were in a community that accepted them for the things that had separated them from people before.
So for a lot of people Ozzy “talked” them out of killing themselves. That’s always going to be someone special. Add in the fact that Ozzy absolutely adored his fans, never stopped being thankful for having fans, and preached that mentality to younger musicians whenever he got that chance.
Be thankful you don’t get it. It means you probably a happier life than most of us who do.
