U.S. Warns China Against Buying Sanctioned Oil
Wall Street Journal ^ | 7/29/2025 | Gavin Bade

U.S. officials warned Chinese authorities that they could face higher tariffs if they continue purchasing oil from Iran and Russia, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters after two days of meetings in Stockholm. “It’s no secret the Chinese are buying 90% of the Iranian oil,” Bessent told reporters.

The U.S. officials also informed the Chinese of a bill moving through Congress that would authorize the president to impose tariffs of up to 500% on nations that import Russian oil, saying that they believed other nations would follow suit. “We explained the nature of the bill to them and told them that we thought that if it passed in the Senate, that the rest of the G7 or the entire EU would likely join us in the secondary tariffs,” Bessent said.

Numbers:

China’s oil consumption (all liquids) 16.4 million bpd.
China’s domestic oil production about 4.3 mbpd.

India oil consumption 3.6 million bpd
India oil production 735K bpd

Iran oil oil consumption 1.95 mbpd
Iran oil production about 5 mbpd

Iran can export about 3 mbpd (good quality oil, high diesel constituent yield)

Russia oil consumption 3.8 mbpd
Russia oil production 10.75 mbpd So exportable 7 mbpd, and actually more since OPEC+, of which they are a major part, has recently increased their allowed production quota

So look at what China and India must have. This is not discretionary. Tariffs or not, there is nowhere else for them to get such enormous amounts.

Do this, and don’t be surprised when China talks about no more export of rare earth minerals to the United States, pharmaceutical drugs, solar panels, etc. Just as a thought exercise and I wonder what percentage of the world is under American sanctions now?

--- "Putin has 10 days to stop the Trump sanctions."

Like that Easter pronouncement you repeatedly posted some months back?

Here's some other headlines applicable to the situation, and, as Freeper Owen commented above, "So look at what China and India must have. This is not discretionary. Tariffs or not, there is nowhere else for them to get such enormous amounts."

News for you. Maybe even news to you.

"...by the end of 2027...."

How the EU plans to ban Russian gas Reuters, 18 June 2025

"...the EU will grant exemptions to Hungary and Slovakia to phase out current Russian gas contracts by 2027, officials familiar with the Commission's plan told FT. "

EU Aims to Cut All Russian Gas Imports by 2027 Oil Price, 16 June 2025

"...will be banned by the end of 2027,?B>."

EU plans to end Russian gas imports by end of 2027 BBC, 6 May 2025

"Europe is buying Russian gas at an unprecedented rate in 2025...."

EU devours Russian gas at record speed despite cutoff Politico, 15 January 2025

Realities of supply and demand affect the whole PR flows and flux in this. But then again, propaganda was never wholly reliant on reality.

By the end of 2027. And even then "exemptions to Hungary and Slovakia" are in the mix.

How much pain is China willing to endure so Russia can have a few more miles of land? If the Democrats actually supported America China would quit this much faster but they know they have many allies in Congress

--- "10 days for you to start advocating for President Trump's plan. Get on board!"

Your echolalia in comments suggests at the minimum a sort of political autism on your part.

I don't have to "advocate" for my President, for whom I voted three times. He is doing some marvelous things, and that "plan" is as yet not detailed. Happy to wait and see what develops. Certainly it will be more interesting than your repeated "bet on it" Easter ceasefire messages.

China has already told the Neocons to STUFF IT. We’ll see how long the sanctions on China last, while our stores empty out.

How much would China endure? A lot... because they know the reason we are so desperate to get a cease fire in the Ukraine isn’t humanitarian, it is for one reason only... so we can pivot and target them.

China is smart enough to know that their tolerance for pain exceeds ours. And that Russia being able to stop the DC/London axis, is good for China also.

And China is not a democrat problem. Republicans want the China project to keep going also.

“10 days…”

We’ll see how things go without access to Chinese products.

I expect the Neocons to hold out for 2 weeks, at most.

I wouldn’t concede the pain question so easily. The Chinese leadership don’t care; sure. However, protests and unrest in China may happen quickly and though it may not end the regime their response could also change dynamics. You may end up being correct but I don’t think they are without risk.
