All of the media companies were threatened and they passed it on to their on-air personalities that if they ever allowed anybody to speak of Obama’s documentation problems or his religion they would lose their careers for sure and their life and the lives of their loved ones were iffy. Doug Hagmann has a signed statement from an eyewitness, as well as the personal handwritten notes of a secretary present when the threat was made. Her life was threatened and I believe that Mike Zullo checked it out and found that one of the witnesses was killed.
The companies weren’t just cable news companies but also radio conglomerates. We tend to forget just how much the internet has revolutionized the ability of podcasters to get the word out without having to go through big companies. Rush was big enough that he could do what he wanted because his contracts were such that if his radio company dropped him they still owed him what was on his contract. Jeff Kuhner somehow was able to skip the censorship as well, but not many in that day had that luxury. Just like Tucker Carlson was gagged until he went on his own. That’s more do-able now than then.
But I hope the whole story gets out so that everybody can see how very much like a gulag this coup actually was - they who in the public eye are claiming to be saving democracy were actually just as thuglike as the Gestapo. That all needs to be made clear - out of fairness to everybody who was gagged and to everybody who wrongly judged people because they didn’t know the whole story.
And the independent people who were ridiculed and delegitimized as “conspiracy theorists” need to be vindicated as well. Nothing will be healed until the whole society says it out loud: “The birthers were right; we were wrong.”
