OMG!
That looks absolutely horrible for the doggie.

Please consider a good doggie obedience training program with you involved in the process with your poooch.

Also if needed, you could get a leash that pulls on the dog’s harness (chest).. and without prongs or needles in it (!!!)

You are on the right track and that is good advice. Most important is practicing both punishments and rewards. A firm “No!” every time it pulls hard.

Here is how I have trained dozens. First don’t walk them. Just stay in the yard and do this repeatedly then after the session just go back in the house and don’t actually go anywhere. When they start to respond to the training sessions well then take walks as a stage two reward.

They expect to go for a walk every time you leash them. You have to squash this expectation. First teach them that you might not even go anywhere at all. Just stand in one place and not go anywhere. Every time they pull yell a firm “No!”. At some point they will give up and either sit down or lay down. That is when you reward them and tell them they are good.

Reverse the psychology. Let them know they are good when they stop and sit down or lay down. Once you do this quite a few times without even going anywhere they get the message that when they pull they get yelled at, but if they back off and sit down they get rewarded. Eventually you can just whisper the NO command and they will stop.

But with that said... I hope you ended up with a higher intelligence Bulldog mix. The low class breeders are breeding all of the intelligence right out of Bulldogs on purpose. The breed is becoming universally dumber than a box of rocks. Some cannot even be trained at all. And they are becoming super unpredictable and dangerous.

I have had a few extremely intelligent and loyal friendly Bulldogs over the years. But now days it is really hard to find any... They are being bred to have no inhibitions, no guilt, no loyalty, and no trainable intelligence. They are breeding animals that can only be used for fighting or to let loose in a junkyard at night and put away during the day to keep people safe from them.

Unfortunately it is the trend... But being a mix should help with that issue... :)

Dogs are pack animals.
They follow the leader.

Be the leader and it will follow.
Yank the dang chain.
Never allow the dog to pull you.

They will do what you alloy them to do.
Like misbehaving toddlers.

I see “Owners” get dragged down the street all time.
Like the videos of the brat kids pulling all the stuff off the shelves at Walmart.

Try wrapping the lead under his belly and around his back in front of his back legs like a half hitch. Now you’ve got him at the neck and his hips. It’s called the Belly Wrap -

Rockwell is in dire need of training. He is a lawsuit looking for a place to happen. He needs way more than a harness. If you have to pepper spray your dog you have zero control over them.

"Obedience school is stupid"

I agree with you if you mean the kind of school you send the dog to, and get back trained. Do those even exist anymore?

The classes I'm familiar with have a trainer that teaches the owners how to work with their own dogs. That's a good thing for new owners and even those with some minimal experience teaching dogs basic commands.

You can always learn something!

“”””Having him get his testicles removed might mellow him down.””””

Sometimes just showing your last dogs testicles in a jar to your new dog, is enough.

Check your homeowner's policy for coverage. You may want to talk to your insurance agent about your dog "George Lincoln".

The pepper spray is not for my dog. It’s for someone else’s dog who is unleashed and on the loose.

I like what she said about a harness. In that it just gives the dog more pulling power.

Next time, go for a lab or a golden. Or smaller.

Is the going to help the poster with their dog?

Some info please?

1. Is this you first large-breed type doggo?
2. Have you owned other dogs in the past?
3. Are you primarily in urban, sub-urban, or rural environment?
4. Is Rockwell intended to be any kind of ‘working’ dog?

Obedience training where the trainer teaches *you* how to work with your dog is certainly worthwhile.

I live in suburbia. I usually have two large-breed dogs at any given time. Right now only one due to the passing of my beloved PTSD golden labrador last year. He was about 90 pounds when he passed.

Our current fuzz-monster is a 90 pound German Shepherd. Going back in time, we’ve had a Golden Lab (90#), Shepherd/hound mix (75#), Pyranees/Newfoundland mix (125#), Golden/Black lab mix (80#), Malamute (100#), and a foster Boxer/Pit puppy (40#). That’s about 35 years of history.

Except for the current shepherd, all of the others were rescues. All had different temperaments and all required different training methods and approaches.

Only a couple needed choke chains. I hate the spiked collars and have never used them, but they do have certain applications. My pups have always been trained to the point where only a simple, standard, neck collar is sufficient for walks and outings.

With high-energy, powerful dogs like Rockwell, I’ve found that a good 15-20 minutes of playtime before a training session, walk, or outing, takes a little gas out of the tank and helps them focus better.

Best of luck! Rockwell looks like a beautiful companion.

Kit

Great job training Chows! That’s no mean feat. They are stubborn, like you say.

And grooming? Woof. :)

I second Leerburg.com- one of the best sites for learning how to train aggressive dogs and equipment appropriate to the situation.

If I had put a harness on my Malamute, she would have dragged me into the next county. It was in her blood!

She started with a choke chain and eventually a simple collar. She could carry a 15-20 lb load in a pack-vest with ease. Made her carry her own food, water, and snacks, on long outings. Along with some for me too.

With two exceptions, I’ve trained all my dogs to wear a ‘cargo’ vest. I’ve even got one MOLLE rig set up with canteens and AR magazine pouches.
