Someone or someones messed up. Xray is one thing, but then just cutting into it to actually determine/sample contents? Thats what remotely controlled tools are for.

Next we’ll hear it was a chopsaw with a metal abrasive saw blade and not a waterjet.

Maybe. But after having worked as a Hazmat officer for years in charge of a group of enthusiastic sometimes over competitive individuals who often felt that they were more qualified than they really were... simple stupidity is often the explanation for situations with tragic outcomes.

I don’t care for the reporting on this incident.

Any explosives tech is trained to assume a device is live until confirmed otherwise by ‘making safe’ (disarming or detonating).

i.e., if it’s not a confirmed training grenade and not disarmed, it’s LIVE. I don’t care WHAT an xray may or may not show. Utter stupidity.

The dumbassery on display here had obvious tragic consequences and will forever be used as safety training for other bomb techs.

Not even TWO male instructors are sufficient to induce the little lady to throw the grenade PAST the sandbags. To further simplify the training process, maybe dummy hand grenades should be offered to girls, made out of solid depleted uranium. Next, train them on non-fragmenting stun grenades.

At least she now has real-world experience in avoiding injury from a hostile’s grenade.
