Fewer than half of ICE arrests under Trump are convicted criminals
Oregon Capital Chronicle ^ | 7/25/25 | Tim Henderson

Despite Trump administration rhetoric accusing Democrats of protecting violent criminals and drug-dealing immigrants, the administration’s arrests have been catching a smaller share of criminals overall, and a smaller share of people convicted of violent and drug crimes, than the Biden administration did in the same time frame.

While the Trump administration has caught more immigrants with convictions for drugs and violence, their share of the rising arrest numbers is smaller, as more people get swept up for minor traffic violations or strictly immigration crimes, according to a Stateline analysis.

Forty percent of the nearly 112,000 arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from Jan. 20 through late June were of convicted criminals. That’s compared with 53% of the nearly 51,000 arrests for same time period in 2024 under the Biden administration.

The share of people convicted of violent crime fell from 10% to 7% and drug crimes from 9% to 5%, according to a Stateline analysis of data from the Deportation Data Project.

The project, led by attorneys and professors in California, Maryland and New York, collects and posts public, anonymized U.S. government immigration enforcement datasets obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests.

Some Democratic states are among those with the highest share of violent criminals in this year’s ICE arrests: Hawaii (15%), Vermont (13%), and California and Nebraska (12%) — while some of the lowest shares were in more Republican states: Maine (2%), and Alabama, Montana and Wyoming (3%).

Immigration attorneys see an increased push to arrest and detain immigrants for any type of violation or pending charge as President Donald Trump pushes for higher arrest and detention numbers to meet his campaign promise for mass deportation. Trump officials have called for 3,000 arrests a day, far more than the current average of 711...

Yeah, they lack the surges of illegals to vote and to be counted in the census for gaining seats in the US House.

California doesn’t lack the surge.

IMO they are wasting time on convicted criminals. They need to be rounding up all illegals and run up the score!

There are 30 million illegals in this country taking American jobs. It doesn’t matter if they committed a crime. They need to go and apply to come in legally.

The convicted ones should have been incarcerated. It is the criminals awaiting apprehension with warrants that are of most interest.

Right. The author is being deliberately manipulative here.

Precisely this.

1. Everyone here illegally is “an illegal”. Thus, by definition, a criminal.

2. There is broad agreement that the worst actors are the ones to be targeted first for removal. Nonetheless, when targeting the worst actors, necessarily, some otherwise “peaceful” (?) criminals will be gathered up. Once they are in the net, so to speak, they need to get the boot.

3. Next!

So they’re un-convicted criminals who entered illegally. BFD

Ask ChatGPT or Grok what percentage of the people being deported by ICE have already been given final deportation orders by an immigration judge. You may be surprised.

Exactly. Half already convicted is pretty good tbh. The media has been portraying it like its 1%.

They are all law breakers. They just haven’t been convicted yet.

That's not exactly correct.

If by..."they just haven't been convicted yet", you mean...."their cases haven't been fully adjudicated"...you are definitely wrong.

97% of all people deported by ICE have been given final deportation orders by an immigration judge. Their cases have been fully adjudicated and closed. They simply refused to comply with the judgement. Now they are being made to comply with the judgement.

If they’ve entered into, or remain in, the USA illegally - then 100% of them are criminals, whether “convicted” or not.

One reason is that when they sweep for the criminals, they encounter other illegals.

Yea, if they allowed ICE to work the jails and state prisons the sweeps would be unnecessary and fewer non-criminal illegal aliens would be cough up in enforcement actions.

The "Resistance" movement is loaded with idiots. Keep it up fools.

But it was 53% under Biden😂😂😂😂

Of course this story doesnt seem to take into consideration the deported criminals under Biden could just turn around and come right back in because the border was wide open. I wonder how many convicted criminals deported by Trump recently were also deported by Biden during his term.

So, the rest are just unconvicted criminals.
