Bill Cosby reacts to Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death

Bill Cosby said that when he learned of the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played his son on "The Cosby Show," he spoke with Phylicia Rashad, who played the mother.

"We were embracing each other over the phone about a dearly beloved friend ... Malcolm was always embracing relationships with everybody he worked with," Cosby told "CBS Weekend News" anchor Jericka Duncan in an interview.

Warner's death shocked the entertainment world Monday when it became known that the performer drowned in Costa Rica the day before during a family vacation. The 54-year-old was apparently pulled out to sea by a current off the Central American nation's Caribbean coast and he couldn't be revived onshore, officials said.

A spokesperson for Cosby said in a statement that the 88-year-old former actor was devastated when he found out Warner had died. Cosby compared learning the news to when he was told that his son Ennis was killed in 1997, according to spokesperson Andrew Wyatt. "It felt the same way," Wyatt said.

Cosby told Duncan he last spoke with Warner about three months ago, discussing Warner's music career. In 2015, Warner, with the Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway, won the Grammy for best traditional R&B performance with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Jesus Children of America." Warner was also nominated for best spoken word poetry album at the 2023 Grammys.

Smart move on her part.

Unlike many,I was never a fan of Cosby’s hit TV show. In fact it’s been many years since I was a fan of *any* network shows. But I heard just this morning that Warner, and the other stars of the show, were hurt badly by Cosby’s legal troubles. I guess when the scandal hit TV stations took the syndicated episodes off the air, resulting in the stars not getting “residuals” checks.

That's too bad. It's about a successful Black family so the messaging was great.

If you look around, our culture is not encouraging what the Cosbys did. An intact nuclear family.

The Cosby Show was a fairly good sitcom to me and watched it somewhat regularly.

I didn't see the Cosby family as a "Black family". They were Americans, that's it.

Obviously, Obama wanted to divide us.

But the good thing is that Americans of all races are starting to realize Obama's dirty tricks by reflecting Trump in 2024.

I got caught in one once. If I didn’t have a small flotation device, I would have drowned. I just had to let the current carry me perpendicular to the shoreline until I found a break I could swim back. You can’t fight through riptides. no way.

I was a fan of Bill Cosby in his heyday of the 60s and 70s. He was arguably the top comedian during that time. Saw him twice live and he was as funny as could be. I was a bit too young to watch I Spy but I did watch his show where he played a physical ed. teacher. Like you I wasn’t too much of a fan of his 80s tv show but I did watch it a bit. After that I only saw him on rare occasions on talk shows until his criminal scandal hit.

I was a fan back then, too... even tho my parents cringed and somehow knew that Cosby was not a ‘good guy’. It only goes to show how naive we can be about some people and how easily they can fool so many.

I would be surprised if Bill Cosby is invited to the funeral, because he has become so controversial, after all those harassment accusations and trials, followed by his time in prison. If Bill is invited, I expect him to definitely show up. There is not much call for his appearance these days. Not for any reason.

A popular co-star, Lisa Bonet, who portrayed one of Bill’s daughters, is very likely to be invited, but I don’t expect her to attend a funeral or public memorial. Lisa gives the impression of wanting to divorce herself of all associations with show business in general, Cosby’s show in particular.

Everytime I see a pic of Lisa as she is today, she looks some variation of being sad, moody, depressed or disgusted with it all. She appears to be someone who spends most the day all alone, getting high. People who become highly popular on TV by the age of 17, often have leftover anxiety that may or may not dissipate as they get older. Sometimes, the anxiety and self doubts are never resolved, and will continue to increase. See Britney Spears.

What is being promoted as “black entertainment” is often openly far worse than anything Cosby was ever accused of doing. It promotes rape, slavery, torture, and murder.

“American entertainment” isn’t virtuous either. Love Island is “trending” nowadays. Real World (Sean Duffy used to be on this show) is tame compared to this show.

I had all of his albums as a kid, and I’ll still listen to them.

Hopefully if any good comes from it, people will learn to swim parallel to the shore, because usually riptides are no more than 20-30 yards wide.

I got rid of all my vinyl when cds arrived in the 1980s. That said I listened to this countless times and always laughed.
