The Russian-controlled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine's east are teetering on the brink of a severe humanitarian crisis, with certain locales having been parched for four months straight. The dire water scarcity is attributed to rampant corruption and gross mismanagement by the Kremlin-backed leadership.
Donetsk and Makiivka are bearing the brunt of the crisis, inciting residents' fears of potential disease outbreaks. In response, local officials have rolled out emergency water rationing for the nearly 1.3 million inhabitants of both cities.
Andrey Chertkov, the interim head honcho of the self-proclaimed DPR government, cautioned citizens about the new tri-weekly water access schedule.

In his official pronouncement, he declared: "The volumes [of water] that we have are not enough for manufacturing, agriculture, but first of all not enough to supply water to the residents of the republic."
He further detailed: "In the coming days, Donetsk and Makiivka will switch to supplying water once every three days. Khartsyzk, Ilovaisk, Zuhres - once every two days," acknowledging the hardships this would impose, yet citing no alternative.
Frustrated denizens have flocked to social platforms to express their ire towards the Russian-appointed authorities and share their harrowing experiences. Oleg Tsaryov, a pro-Russian sympathizer, lamented that Donetsk was becoming inundated with plastic bags filled with human waste.
"You can't flush the toilet. It's a common thing: people in Donetsk put a small bag in the toilet. And then those bags, the normal people throw them in the trash. Those who don't, throw them under windows. Neighbours fight against this."
