Manatee County utility crews unearthed a piece of history, dating back thousands of years, while digging a trench for a waterline. They found a fossilized claw of a giant ground sloth that was covered in dirt and vines.
"They were digging away and found what they thought was an ordinary tool," said Charlie Hunsicker, the director of Manatee County’s Natural Resources Department.

Dating back more than 11,000 years, the fossilized find was determined to be a claw from a Jefferson’s ground sloth, a slightly smaller version of the giants that first inhabited South America. "When South America and North America joined, those animals migrated up through Texas, Mexico and into the Southeast. All of this was really a tropical jungle and forest at the time," Hunsicker explained.

Yes, the Younger Dryas flood was around 12,000 years ago which brought the ice age to an end and was a mass extinction event.
They would have to be a ground sloth as I don’t think any trees in Florida are big enough to hold one off the ground.

Now if I only had an idea where Manatee County is.
I’ve never been there, but it’s on the Gulf side of Florida. I think Florida is the only U.S. state that have manatees.
Thanks
Jerry Nadler’s ancestor.
They get manatees as far north as North Carolina .
Ironically, a Giant Manatee was discovered in Ground Sloth County!
