Old Media Dying: Waning CBS Cancels Colbert. Is Kimmel Next?
The New American ^ | July 19, 2025 | Selwyn Duke

“So, for the first time in history, Americans have stopped watching NBC, CBS TV, and ABC,” reported commentator Bill O’Reilly Thursday. “Their viewing level has fallen below 20 percent — unheard of.”

“And it’s because they’re boring and they’re far left,” O’Reilly elaborated. “That’s the two reasons.”

The latest casualty of this legacy-media collapse is notable, too.

CBS is canceling The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, effective after the 2025-’26 season.

The move will end what will have been a 33-year run that began with host David Letterman in 1993. Colbert took the show’s helm in 2015, shortly after Letterman’s retirement.

The news-making announcement has prompted some observers to ask: Is this the death of the late-night genre? Actually, it portends far more:

The old media’s slow but sure demise, as new media come to flower and inherit the former’s mantle. With media/entertainment not being on our culture’s periphery, but at its center, it’s a sea change at least as significant as the transition from horse and buggy to automobile.

Is Its Cancellation the Funniest Late Show Happening in Recent Memory?

No one should feel too sorry for Colbert. After all, with an approximate $75 million net worth, he won’t be missing too many meals. It’s clear, too, that many won’t miss him. For example, PJ Media’s David Manney picked up where O’Reilly left off and wrote, comedically:

Nearly all of us have that uncle who knows he is the funniest guy in the room. Unfortunately, he has to explain his own jokes, wait for the laughs, and hear crickets.

That is Stephen Colbert.

After a long decade of being our unfunny uncle, he repeats that act every night. Finally, at long last, CBS performed the...

I think if the networks hired a less partisan host, people would still watch. Jay Leno is a public Democrat but was fair to his guest, and pretty funny. I enjoyed watching him.

He's an old school Democrat. In other words, he's a dinosaur.

It's possible for Jimmy Fallon to be more like Jay Leno. But his bosses are not letting him do that. If they want him to make Trump jokes, then that's what he'll do.

The late show format is outdated. Podcasts, YouTube, etc. has replaced it.

Late night shows have failed because they all have crappy music.

Didn’t Leno get rid of Brandon Marsalis because he sucked?

According to Wiki , Marsalis said he want to kiss Leno’s ass.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branford_Marsalis

In 1995, Marsalis left The Tonight Show, having become unhappy in the role: he disliked that he was supposed to always show enthusiasm, even for jokes he thought were unfunny. He was succeeded as bandleader by guitarist Kevin Eubanks. In a well-publicized interview soon after leaving, Marsalis said, “The job of musical director I found out later was just to kiss the ass of the host, and I ain’t no ass kisser.” He also complained that when he did not laugh or smile, some viewers’ perception was, “Oh, he’s surly. He hates his boss.” When the interviewer asked if Marsalis did hate Leno, Marsalis responded, “Oh, I despised him.” He later stated that he did not hate Leno, and that this was a sarcastic response to what he considered “a ridiculous question”.[7]

That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

Really.

He got fired because his music sucked.

Yep. We on the Right knew Carson and Leno were liberals. The difference is they were fair. They tried to be entertaining and funny and generally succeeded in doing so. They didn’t view it as their mission to preach politics all night every night. Thus they got good ratings and the hacks that followed did not.

Outside of sports I have not watched network television in years.

People used to be shocked when I told them outside of live college football, I have not watched network TV since the 20th century. Now I think many others have finally come to the same conclusion I reached a generation ago.

Fallon doesn’t look or sound sinister like Colbert or Kimmel. He could have been Jay for new generation. But, as you said, it depends on the bosses.

These woke shows were always losing money, they were just propped up with USAID money for sure. They were just funny to the few liberals running them. They will all go under until you get a Leno or Carson type back in the seat.
