Outraged flyer reveals what young child did in business class that 'ruined his flight' - are his complaints fair?

A United Airlines passenger was left infuriated over what he claimed was the bad behavior of a young child flying in the business class cabin.

Mitchell Miller shared two snaps of a little boy standing on his United Polaris seat on a transatlantic flight to Paris on his Threads account.

'An immature father who lets his son scream and shout and stand up in the seat and jump up and down so far for the whole flight,' Miller wrote.

'The kid hasn’t ST*U (shut the **** up) since we took off and daddy couldn’t care less. 4 hours, 52 minutes so far…2 more hours of this [expletive]. Can we get children under 12 banned from business class…please??'

The post sparked a fiery debate over whether kids should be allowed to fly business or first class, where seats cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars.

'You should have shamed them more. Bad parents deserve it. This isn’t acceptable. Child is in a public place,' one comment agreed.

Another commenter shared a similar experience when they were on a flight with a child screaming for their mom, standing and jumping on their seat, and running up and down the aisles during a 7.5 hour business class trip.

'The whole cabin was fuming. A baby I get, like annoying but it’s a baby, this was a full child that they actively ignored and didn’t once attempt to calm down or discipline,' the comment continued.

“Something like this happened to me 40plus years ago. My oldest son who was around 4 started to “pitch a Fit” in Walmart. I got down and was Eye to Eye to to him and threaten to spank him in front of everyone if he didn’t ‘knock it off!. That was it! He shut up and behaved after that.”

I go in walmart and see kids screaming, having a fit or crying out for their moms and what is mom doing? She is on her stupid cell phone. I wish these parents would get off the phone and be a parent.

Yeah, I’ve seen that too.

No respect for the church or God.

And I usually wonder what the the parents will think when their kids grow up and turn their backs on God.

Perhaps the guy should have said politely—Hey, I’m trying to work/get sleep can you calm the boy down? BTW, even more infuriating is when parents bring babies to nice restaurants.

I used one once at the state fair.

Got some really dirty looks but also some very knowing smiles.

had a friend from college from a large family and he always remembered the first restaurant meal. Beforehand his dad told them they will behave and eat and drink everything put in front of them. After the 3rd water glass refill by the waitress he turned to his dad and said, “Dad I can’t drink anymore.”

It all depends on the parents and children. re behavior.

We flew with the progeny at all different ages with absolutely NO problem/NO bad behavior at all! How? Because we were/are good parents and grandparents, and will never allow bad behavior of any kind, ANYWHERE!

And now, adults exhibit terrible behaviors, even when sober, on planes, and everywhere else, as well.

Many people think using a child leash is child abuse.

My daughter was two when I used it, and she could run around some instead of being confined to the stroller the whole day or having her hand held.

She slept really well that night.

Our kids (as young as two 2 year olds and a 5 year old) used to get compliments in the restaurants for being so well-behaved. Of course it took a couple of times walking out of a McDonald’s or ice cream store without getting anything for them to get it.

“Nope - sorry. I told you earlier, if you can’t behave we would leave. No playing in the play area, and you can have peanut butter sandwiches when we get home.”

The twins were so excited to go on their first plane trip, I suppose they were six. Once we got up to cruising altitude they both said “This is it!?” Of course we had all sorts of drawing stuff and books and stuff for them as we flew coast to coast.

Having something to do is critical.

Heck, I get bored out of my mind on long flights with nothing to do. I just have learned enough self control to not act out.

That’s a great story. Louis Anderson could have used that in his routine!

LOL...I used one of those too!

That used to be the NORM!

I remembered when my brother was little my mother used one on him ( I guess I had one too, but can't remember THAT far back ), so I got one too, for the progeny.

My son and DIL flew with their two children, ages 3 and 10 months, to Japan in May. They timed their flights for the normal sleep times of the kids so for a good portion of the flight, they both slept. Mom had a variety of snacks and activities for them both.

This is the second time they have flown with the kids and both times had no problems.

It’s the parent’s responsibility to be prepared and keep the children calm and distracted during a flight.

Truth is some just don’t care or don’t know how to manage their children.

Start telling the young child about Jesus. Watch his parent/s scramble to have him disengage and behave himself.

Let me be clear.

Brandon wrote - “Can we get children under 12 banned from business class…please?”

Let’s explore this more factually.

Yes, Parent should control their kids. In restaurants. Airplanes. Buses. Everywhere. The real failure here is the parents. No question there.

As for Brandon’s actual wish/complaint, United isn’t at fault:

https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/contract-of-carriage.html

From what I read, there is nothing here about United guaranteeing customers - business class, coach, first class - a perfect trip. Indeed, there isn’t anything about parents being obligated to control their kids.

I’ve had plenty of flights, train and bus trips I’m my life. Most are peaceful, some were fair, and a handful were awful. The best way to avoid nuisances is loud rock music and reading material.

It also helps to have an understanding that God didn’t guarantee us perfection. Indeed, offer this little imperfection in your life up to God. If an unruly child on a flight triggers you to go on social media petulant frenzy, maybe the problem is in the mirror.

Fly private. Or drive. Or learn to read contracts. Or, start your own airline that bans kids.

“Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.”

Yep - tough love works!

Yes, what you said.

Also, to me, the most important rule of child-rearing is to always be 100% clear with them as to your expectations. They tend to behave in a manner that is generally consistent with well communicated and enforced expectations. Plus they are happier and more confident, because they know what to do.
