A Florida woman is accused of attacking another driver after that person ran over a chicken crossing a road in Key West, Florida, on July 9, police said.
The suspect in the case was identified as 38-year-old Cynthia Diaz Sosa who told officers with the Key West Police Department she had stopped her car on Petronia Street and was “waiting to let a chicken cross the road” when the situation grew tense, Law and Crime reported Tuesday.
The other driver apparently grew frustrated and began honking, eventually passing the suspect’s vehicle. That driver reportedly ran over the chicken and killed it.
Sosa claimed she wanted to teach that driver “a lesson” and pursued her. When she caught up to the other drive, Sosa allegedly tried to open the other driver’s door. When she finally got it open, Sosa allegedly attacked the driver and someone else in the vehicle with bear spray as the chaos unfolded.
Police later found the suspect and she was arrested on two counts of aggravated battery along with other charges.
Social media users had mixed reactions on the chicken situation, one person writing, “I don’t see an issue here, let my girl go free. And rip chicken.”
“Gotta admit, I’m kinda on the fence with this one. Which is probably where the chicken should’ve stayed,” another user commented, while someone else said, “I mean… she did right by the bird.”
Feral chickens became a common sight in Key West after settlers arrived in the 1820s, according to CBS News.
Corey Malcolm, who is the lead historian for the Florida Keys History Center, said the settlers sold the fowl to residents and years later when the Cuban migration began they brought cockfighting with them.

Why did the hen cross the road?
To lay it on the line.
I watch a fair amount to YT ‘dashcam’ videos. These can be qiute instructive.
I’ve learned a couple of things beyond having a dashcam myself.
I don’t wat to drive in Russia or China - ever.
Do NOT stop in a travel lane, ever. If you see an accident or road blockage, get into the stop lane ASAP and let the crashes go on without you.
If I had to choose - between stopping in a travel for a bunch of waterfowl/chicken/etc or driving on....I’ll drive on.
I kind of agree with her. Why did the driver go out of their way to kill the chicken?
Vegans need to have a warning on their car as a public service.
That’s because FReepers are learning to wait a bit to find out both sides of the story before crying fowl.
Doesn’t help to answer the age-old question...
She’s lucky the other driver wasn’t packing heat.
She looks completely innocent, yes. Leave her the cluck alone!
Sosa was on her way to ChikfilA.
White chicken you can eat, this one was a chicken of color.
To prove to the squirrel that it could.........
Moral to the story, never listen to a chicken.. Or a squirrel for that matter......
I once almost hit a squirrel with my car. Chased it over two lawns, and one flower bed until it finally ran up a tree........
We live on our sailboat just off of Key West in the mooring field (until the fall anyway). We even just drove down Patronia St., so, I was surprised by the article saying someone passed her on that street as it is quite narrow.
There are indeed chickens EVERYWHERE. They are protected as Key West is a bird sanctuary.
That being said, the local government is thinking of doing a culling as they are overrunning this island and most of the others in the keys. It will get to the point where they start starving to death (like deer).
In our time here, I only seen one dead chicken in the road. Most of them are smart enough to make it across.
OH! And these chickens are HIGHLY Judgemental! Back in March, we were in a boatyard down here painting the hull and other jobs. Next door to the yard is a nice resort with an outdoor bar and grill. We went over there frequently when we had a long day and didn’t feel like cooking. They have pretty good wings and I was sitting there eating some and this rooster came up and started judging me something fierce! I took a bite of wing, and, just judged him right back....he backed off.

I actually flattened a possum. Drivin down the road late at night…. Just like the song said…
