They didn’t get rid of it, they stretched the limits of it. Ever watch LeBron drive to the hoop? Opposite shoulder and forearm knocking defenders out of the way and traveling on a regular basis.

And the NBA actually helped the offense with the zone under the hoop where a defensive player can’t make any contact without being called for a personal and if he is in it cannot get a charging foul against the offensive player.
They didn’t stop the violence, they legalized it with rules and interpretation of the rules. Same violence, just different application.
