They were rolled out across Britain to cut speeds and prevent traffic accidents in built-up areas. But new figures suggest that the vast majority of drivers are speeding along many stretches of roads with 20 mph limits.
According to the Department for Transport, three-quarters of drivers exceed the limit on “free-flowing” sections of 20-mph roads in England — those with no cameras, sharp bends, junctions or traffic calming measures.
Half of drivers who admitted to speeding and were spoken to by the RAC said they sped on such roads because they felt the limit was “inappropriate” — a view also reflected by those spoken to by the BBC.
The DfT figures also show that a record number of people — 1.84 million — attended speed awareness courses in the UK last year.
The data was collected in 2024 from automated traffic counters on “free-flowing” 20-mph roads in England. The average speed recorded was 24 mph — but about 10% of vehicles exceeded 30 mph. …

I can walk faster than 20.
The low-IQ mentality here is “the slower, the safer.”
They are incapable of handling even slightly complex thought.
Why not just make it zero? What could be safer than that?
Do they measure in mph in the UK?
24 is considered speeding.
I live in the bluest of blue states. They use mobile speed cameras in construction zones. They publish that tickets are issued at 12 mph over the limit.
Everyone does ten over.
4? Pikers.
Indeed. I’ve gotten worse with age. I thought older people were supposed to drive slower.
Very good question. The BBC article definitely says MPH, but it seems like it should be kilometers per hour (20 MPH = 32 KPH).
I’m curious what “traffic calming measures” are. Speed bumps? I really hate speed bumps.
It’s globalist speak for anything that makes it more difficult to get from here to there in a passenger car.
New dedicated bike lanes are considered traffic calming measures.
Heck, my 4Runner will go that fast at idle in Drive.
It’s a term I hadn’t heard. Seems like “traffic annoying measures” might be more accurate. But then, that’s globalist-speak for you, call something its opposite and think that makes it so.
Yes.
What’s worse is that my cruise control won’t engage unless I’m going at least 25. I’m awful in school zones. I go in under 20 but am approaching 30 on the way out. One car I had allowed a slower speed cruise control which was great for keeping me legal in school zones.
You can ride an f’n skateboard faster than 20 miles an hour!! And to think that the UK gave us Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss, Eric Broadly, Colin Chapman, Derrick Bell, Jaguar, Aston Martin, MG, Norton, BSA, Triumph, Lucas Electrics, and so much more when it comes to proper motorcars and fabled drivers. Well, maybe not so much Lucas Electrics but they made a decent fuel injection system.
“I can walk faster than 20mph”
No you can not! Top speed of an Olympic sprinter is about 28 mph which is incredible. But a 20mph hour speed limit is just stupid, unless in residential areas with small winding roads of which I did live on in England years ago and quite warranted.
Me too. I always bang my head on the roof of the car when I go over one. 🤡
The safest speed limit used to be at limit where about 75% to 80% of the drivers drove at, or below.
I Can’t Drive 55!
Let alone 20.
That mentality is not limited to the UK. It’s alive and well here in the USA. Florida just passed a law that defines “super speeders” as anyone going more than 70 mph over the speed limit OR going more than 100mph. While that’s 30mph above the max Florida speed limit what’s magic about 100? Is 99 not all that bad, but 100 immediately much worse? Morons and jackasses aching to control everything. Btw. I have no problem with the 70 over part, it having driven on FL interstates 100 is only 15 over the average I e observed. And Texas has a speed limit of 85. If 85 works for interstates in TX what’s wrong with the rest of the country?
no cameras traffic calming measures
Surveillance states really do stink.
