Probably related. The Lemnian Stele, their major trading partners, tomb decorations, all point to Aegean roots and/or relatives. The Romans borrowed / co-opted the story of the Etruscan migration, which was current common knowledge in Herodotus' time.

And of course, the Turks were nowhere near there at the time.

Yep. Aeneas appears as an Italian founding hero centuries before the Empire... by the 6th century BC on Etruscan vases and even in ancient literature.

It’s interesting that Homer alludes to some tradition about Aeneas but doesn’t say what it is, and he keeps Aeneas a very minor character. The Italian tradition seems based on something else besides Homer.

Odysseus’ hollow ships were in there. Well, and probably still are under there somewhere. ;^)

The "Eric Klein" at line 26:26 should be Eric Cline. He is the author of 1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed.

Hi wife Diane Cline, also a respected scholar, died of cancer in 2023.

He was on FR, briefly, because someone tipped him off about one of my posts (that’s kinda mysterious), a real treat to argue with him. 😎 Not only is his acc’t nuked, attempts at listing his old posts yields a blank screen, probably at his request.
