Do Not Fear the Future
American Thinker ^ | 10 Jul, 2025 | J.B. Shurk

What is more important — wealth or health? Do you prefer to be loved by adoring strangers or by close members of your family? When you depart this world, would you rather be remembered for your political power or moral courage? Is the cultivation of a virtuous character more valuable than the accumulation of material things?

I ask these questions to highlight how much power you have over your own life. I often receive messages from people who are worried about the future. Some sound despondent about the challenges ahead. Some are happy that President Trump did this and unhappy that he did that. Some seem so engrossed in the turbulent world of politics that they struggle to be upbeat about more important things.

I am an ordinary sinner with no special knowledge about our existence, and my intention is not to lecture others. I do wish to remind people, though, that they are in control. No matter how coercive governments and corporations are, we are still masters of our fates. We decide what we believe. We decide how we will act. We decide what costs we are willing to bear in defense of our principles.

There is something liberating in the acknowledgment of these simple facts. Surely our principles aren’t really our principles until we are willing to suffer in defense of them. Our earthly struggles are the grindstones that sharpen our moral virtue. Adversity is as much a blessing as it is a burden.

Those who worry so much about the future that they squander the 86,400 seconds each day sacrifice present happiness. And happiness, as I suggest in the first paragraph, cannot be bought. Fame is a shabby substitute for love. Just consider how many celebrities use alcohol and drugs to treat their depression.

We should not worry about the future. But we must stay informed and act with firm conviction.

For me, I want to change the world in some small way, by the Grace of the Lord and be Saved by His Blood. Everything on this Earth will pass away, but He will not. Eternity rests with Him.

We are not Saved by Works, that is impossible. But IMHO, the Lord expects us to work for His Kingdom. I pray I can influence souls towards Him. Many are MUCH better at this than I LOL.

God bless

Jesus said something similar.

Matthew 6:34 -- So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Wealth creates the illusion that you are in control. When you lose wealth, you learn that you are not. So, I try to control what I can, but not worry about the things I cannot (which is most things). We do the same thing with health. Most of us take it for granted, but few realize that they are merely one heartbeat away from death. Enjoy life while you can, but realize that we are only given a short slice of it. Make the most of the time you have.

“No matter how coercive governments and corporations are, we are still masters of our fates. We decide what we believe. We decide how we will act. We decide what costs we are willing to bear in defense of our principles.”

Except alone in our own selfish little personal happy bubble of non-concern we are powerless to change anything. United we stand divided we fall. This article concept is contradictory. If we are not to be concerned about the ambush being arranged in that valley ahead then why are decisions even required at all? Why are actions even required at all? Decisions and actions towards what if not the future?

This don’t worry be happy and just let fate determine our future is self defeating and surrender. The reason we are in this situation is because we are already selfishly only concerned about our own little personal bubbles and refuse to come together and stand on principles together as one even if it means personal sacrifice and inconvenience.

The reason we are losing this war is because our enemy does set future goals and do come together as one effort towards those goals one at a time. But we refuse to do this because our personal bubbles in the now are a priority over the future of the mutual cause or any goals... So don’t worry be happy ignore the future is just throwing in the towel.

We may as well all just walk away and go fishing or bowling right now and just let them do with us what they may.

There really is no "future", the idea is just a construct that humans have invented, there is no "past" either.

Past is just memory, future is imagination, point to either in real time...you can't, there is only now and now is where we all live like it or not.

So don't fear or worry about the future, it doesn't exist and don't waste time thinking about what was for it is gone forever, worry about what is now, and praise the Lord the He has given you now, he will keep you now, he will bestow His love and grace on you...now.
