MOHAVE COUNTY, Ariz. — A rescue crew successfully extracted a dog that had fallen about 100 feet down a mine shaft in Arizona on Monday.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team reported getting a call at about 1:30 p.m. from a woman who had been out exploring a mining claim near Van Deeman Mine, located west of White Hills.

The woman's 9-year-old dog, Hailey, had reportedly fallen down a mine shaft and was still showing signs of movement. A rescue team responded to the area and utilized a rope system to allow a crew member to rappel to the bottom where Hailey was located.

The dog was fastened to a harness and was safely extracted from the mine along with the rescuer. MCSO said Hailey did not appear to be harmed.

The search and rescue organization advised residents not to explore old mine shafts in the area.

Obligatory:
“Lassie, what is it girl?”
“Timmy fell down the mine shaft?”
“Not Timmy this time?”
“Another dog?”

I’ve done quite a bit of exploring around old mines in AZ. They are dangerous. You need to keep a distance from any mine shaft. Thoroughly enjoyed it though. So much history.

In a world often full of horrible events, this is a good thing. It warms the heart.

Trapped in a mine, no food to eat
And the only ones left to tell the tail,
Were Rex, and Spot and me

A group of us used to go mineral collecting in mines in southern Arizona back in the 80s and 90s, but I haven’t been underground much since then.
