Last April, the NBA issued its first lifetime ban for gambling in 70 years to Jontay Porter after finding that “Porter disclosed confidential information about his own health status to an individual he knew to be an NBA bettor. Another individual with whom Porter associated and knew to be an NBA bettor subsequently placed an $80,000 parlay proposition bet with an online sports book, to win $1.1 million, wagering that Porter would underperform in the March 20 game.”
Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal reported that a 2023 game played by then-Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier was under federal investigation stemming from the same probe into Porter. The league said they “conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules,” but it’s alarming that the federal probe into a relative unknown like Porter expanded into a $96.3 million dollar player like Rozier.
And now that probe may be continuing to expand into a player with $60 million in career earnings and multiple stops on his NBA tour, as federal authorities are investigating Detroit Pistons guard and impending free agent Malik Beasley on allegations of gambling related to NBA games and prop bets. A gambling industry source told ESPN’s David Purdum that “At least one prominent US sportsbook detected unusually heavy betting interest on Beasley’s statistics beginning around January 2024” when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks.
How bad is this?
There is clearly some shadiness that occurred in games from the 2023-24 season, as it has resulted in a federal probe and a lifetime ban for at least one player. The NBA’s regular season has long been regarded as something of a joke, going back even well before the days of Tim Duncan’s “DNP – old” designations from San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

Guess he didn’t have the option to go play baseball for a few years.
The what?
OK some don't, but enough to make it a viable business? It's like saying horse racing could be profitable just from selling tickets. At least the tracks aren't hypocrites about it.
Say it ain’t so, Joe!
This ain’t new.

Is that the same thing as "aiding and abetting"?
Seven years. So really the ratings have started to decline before the NBA decided to legalize gambling. But it's even worse today.
The worst part is not the "fixing" it is the fact that so many young'uns believe that they can make a living by sports betting.
As an ex-bettor that bet tens of thousands during my typical weekend for several decades, I can testify that the reasons that there are bright lights in all of the casinos in the world, is that the "mooks" pay for them, and I was a giant MOOK.
I was also successful in business and that prevented me from going tap city, but I urinated away multiples of millions before either sanity or senility stopped the negative cash flow.
There is no way to beat the "bookies", regardless if they hang out on the street corner bars in Pittsburgh or own a glitzy gambling joint in Vegas...they win.
I know, don't believe me, try it.
It would shock me if gambling wasn’t rampant in every major pro sport......players betting on or against their own team wouldn’t surprise me either.
After all, turning a blind eye to bad actors is what I’ve observed the nfl and nba doing quite well over the years.
The NBA, pffft. I’d rather watch Caitlin Clark play basketball.
Whats the old rubric?
If you’re playing in a poker game and don’t know who the sucker is, then you’re the sucker.
Betting scandals will be the ruination of professional sport... Betting has been going on since sport began.. But now you can bet in ‘real’ time... Will he make the next basket? Will he hit the next pitch? Will it be a fastball?
You name it... It’s all up for grabs and computer tech makes it instantaneous. Betting has never been easier nor more pervasive.
She has some lovely thighs
Without the NBA, you wouldn’t be watching Clark play basketball. While the WNBA has announced expansion plans, the players are set on killing the golden goose that is Clark. A recent player poll ranked her as their number 9 guard. I’ve attended WNBA games (the Lynx have a good thing going and can draw fans) but I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in being unable to name the eight guards ahead of her.
Personally, I think CC will "retire" in two or three years.
She'll try to play LPGA or she'll coach college basketball somewhere.
The NBA ceased to be a sport and became a show in the early 2000’s. Might as well bet on the WWE.
Agreed. When Jordan passed on the torch to James. 🔥
I didn’t know the NBA had translators as well !
