Humans won't travel to distant stars. Von Neumann type machines will. If the planet is Earthlike enough, they will grow humans from scratch. Probably blend in some of the DNA of local fauna if any exist for extra adaptability to the colonized planet.
Probably has been already been done before by any civilizations that may be hundreds or thousands of years more advanced than we are.
