Her name is Mary Yoder. She is at ‘White Cottage Company.’ Super industrious, great cook - her main thing is fixing up her house and gardens and upgrading thrift store items. I’ve watched her for years and she just keeps getting better and better.

She releases new content on Wednesdays. There’s usually an ‘ad’ for things she’s currently selling on her Etsy shop - she makes candles, pillow covers, aprons, etc. All practical stuff.

This past year she’s been battling Lyme Disease and went to FL for special treatments.

A very down-to-earth lady. :)

“I watered the plants and they turned yellow. Does that mean they need fertilizing badly?”

Are the LEAVES yellowing or is the FRUIT turning yellow?

We are in for two more days of YUCK - 90’s and high humidity, then we cool off back into the 70’s which will be AWESOME!

Scurrying this morning to get Emma Jolene out into the exercise yard while it’s still relatively cool, then going to pick cucumbers and see if my green beans are ready, yet - they were getting there when I mowed past them, yesterday.

Mowing took all DAY, yesterday! It was so humid that the grass would NOT dry out! A two-hour job took over FOUR - I had to take breaks while things dried because grass was clogging up my mower and sticking to the mowing platform, so I had to clean that out a lot so it wouldn’t knock off the belts.

Wednesday is a Goof Off Day with a SIL - we’re going JUNKING and out to lunch, which we both love. :)

Things are fine at Bear Camp. The two dogs that got into it with a Porcupine are OK. They went to the Vet who sedated them and got all the quills out of their faces. No damage to their eyes, thank goodness! They are on ‘kennel rest’ for a week and antibiotics. (Shawnee and Huxley) ‘A Hunting Life’ is NOT all luxury!

Sorry about the doggos! Hot and humid and no rain here. I went out early to water. I was too tired last night and the mosquitos finally came out. Pick a really nice head of broccoli, a couple of small zucchini, a cuke and some egyptian walking onions that were growing outside the main patch. Still have to go out on the patio and pick some shishitos. I have one plant in a huge pot and another elsewhere. The potted plant is almost 3X the size of any in the ground and is loaded. Stay cool!

Chinese or European?

Dunstan. It's an American/Chinese hybrid. Supposed to be 15/16 American genetics but I wouldn't bet the house on that. They're not well thought of in the chestnut restoration community, but I'm not trying to save the world so that doesn't much matter to me.

I just want some fresh chestnuts to eat, and it's hard to buy good ones in the store. All I can ever find for sale around here are European and they're always stale and half dried up.

I have quite a few native persimmon trees on my property so no need to buy any. Mrs. Augie loves those things but I'm not crazy about them. I expect they would be very good in sweet rolls or bread but separating the flesh from the seeds and skin is a lot of work so we don't bother.

Leaves

Looked at it again last night and I think it might at least partially due to the downy mildew

The great-nephews are on the way to visit .... chaos & mayhem (2 & 4 yo)! The stairlift is locked & so is my bedroom (no access to self defense items). I think a trip to Flotzie’s for ice cream will be a nice diversion (Oma treating!).

HOT and WET here in the Middle of Misery this past week. Ugh.

The electric fence around my tomato patch has kept the freeloading groundhog at bay so far. My Australian Shepherd learned about it too. I was picking cukes and heard a blood-curdling yip from across the garden. Looked up to see her suspended about three feet in the air after she jumped from getting shocked. It was one of those funny but not funny deals.

The heat has been unkind to my new rhubarb plants. Several of them have completely folded up, as in no signs of life. Hopefully they’ve just gone dormant and will put out some new growth this fall. We’ll see.

Everything else is flourishing. I’m having to pick cukes every day to keep up with them. Mrs. Augie has made 20-ish quarts of lacto-fermented dill pickles since the cukes started producing.

Yesterday I got the boat out for the first time this summer. Went fishing on the Osage River. Brought home one nice blue cat and a ~4’ shortnose gar. Fish tacos for supper tonight at my house. ;-)

I’m glad our dogs didn’t get it any worse - it was a young Porky, so the quills weren’t as awful as they could’ve been. Lakota (RIP) got into an adult Porky at one time and he had the battle scars to prove it. He was one tough mudder, LOL! He was a Grand Nite Champion on raccoon. We lost him to old age last year. He made it to 10, which is ancient for hunting dogs.

I’m taking a Lunch Break right now. I was out earlier and found 2 tomatoes - ‘Big Salsa’ or the like from Burpee, three bonus heads of broccoli (they I pulled the plants - the rest of the heads were going to flower due to the heat - and 8 Jalapenos for the ‘Jalapeno Pickle Relish’ which has been salted and will rest until 3pm when I cook it down. I also was able to pick enough Green Beans for my supper and of course all the cucumbers I could carry!

I have some more Mrs. Wages Mixes coming and I am going to do more Bread & Butter Pickles as well as some Kosher Dill that you can do in the fridge - but I’ll can/process some of those jars, too.

Going to water all the porch pots and give them some fertilizer when the sun shifts this afternoon. Going to fill more gallon jugs with water from the rain barrel - rumor has it we MIGHT get some rain tonight or tomorrow.

I haven’t seen any Tomato Hornworms. I think they looked at my sad state of tomatoes, laughed their heads off and moved on, LOL! Peaches are looking good and should be ready in a week. Pears, too. My oldest ‘Liberty’ apple is practically laying DOWN - with all the rain and her huge fruit-set, it’s going to be really easy to pick her clean this season.

The ‘Sabelka’ tomato is hanging in there! Lots of tomatoes on, but not ripe yet and the plant is pretty scrawny compared to last year. :( It’s KILLING me that The V-8 Juice might have to have more store-bought ingredients this year. Ugh!

Copper Spray for the mildew. A shot of fertilizer won’t hurt, if you haven’t been fertilizing.

They can’t do much with damaged leaves though, so I would tend to that problem first.

Offering Ice Cream to 2 and 4 year olds? I’m sure they’ll refuse, LOL!

Have fun!

They played basketball with Oma (we have a goal on the back driveway), several games of hide & seek, tried to climb trees, were swinging in the porch swing, roaring like dinosaurs & of course, ice cream! The 2 yo ate probably 2/3rds of his (where did he put it???) & the 4 yo maybe half. Now when they visit, they’re going to want a trip to the ice cream stand. The oldest boy wanted to come back to the house with Oma, but they needed to get over the mountain & back home. It was a good visit - my mom really enjoyed it.

PS - the boys don’t know it yet, but they’re getting a lab puppy in 2-3 weeks & a miniature goat. They might know about the goat, but the pup is a definite surprise!

No tomato worms here yet. Will be curious to hear about the sabelka tomatoes. I have 4 quarts of V8 leftover. I’ll make it last til next year. Out comes the shot glass!
