Man, 92, guilty of 1967 rape and murder of woman

A 92-year-old man has been found guilty of the rape and murder of a Bristol woman in a case that remained unsolved for nearly six decades.

Louisa Dunne, 75, was found strangled on her living room floor by a neighbour on Britannia Road in Easton, Bristol, on 28 June 1967.

Convicted rapist Ryland Headley, of Clarence Road in Ipswich, has now been found guilty of Mrs Dunne's murder following a trial at Bristol Crown Court.

Senior investigating officer Det Insp Dave Marchant said Headley, who was in his 30s when he killed Mrs Dunne, had left "a legacy of misery and pain".

Despite the efforts of police investigating Mrs Dunne's death 58 years ago, no key suspect was identified.

Police collected about 19,000 prints from men and boys at the time with no success. They also made about 8,000 house-to-house inquiries and took 2,000 statements.

It was only when the case was re-examined by Avon and Somerset Police decades later that DNA testing of a swab that contained semen was linked to Headley.

Det Insp Marchant called him a "dangerous serial offender" with a "shocking and abhorrent history" and said there was a sense of "gravity" when police were told of the positive result.

For me, June 28, 1967 was a rather ordinary Wednesday. It was hot and smoggy. I had early morning classes, so I had to wolf down breakfast. At around noon, I watched Donna Reed on our black-and-white TV while eating lunch. In addition, I probably grabbed the LA Times to read about the Vietnam War, Red China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, in which I was intently interested, or about the LA Dodgers' subpar performance that season.

Meanwhile, I was looking forward to the upcoming holiday weekend, where we would watch fireworks at Anaheim Stadium, aka the Big A, a baseball field down in Anaheim located across the street from an orange grove. Periodically throughout the day, I would tune in to KWIZ, which blasted out Oldies at 1480 kilocycles on the AM band--It would be four years before I got my first FM radio--but I would occasionally surf over to Boss Radio 93 KHJ to keep track of the latest Top 40 hits.

“It was only when the case was re-examined by Avon and Somerset Police decades later that DNA testing of a swab that contained semen was linked to Headley.”

Genetic genealogy is solving long cold cases with associated DNA samples.

Rapist in particular leave their identity with the victim.

One thing we can rely on is that he’s not an Asian.

To paraphrase late comedian Lenny Bruce, if Jesus had been born (in the 20th century) we would all be wearing little electric chairs around our necks.

Cheers!

I turned 12 that year.
Mowing lawns and weeding gardens for extra money. My allowance for doing house chores was 2$ per week.
My oldest brother knocked up and married his girlfriend
to avoid the draft. 1967
Funny that two of his three sons ended up in the military! His first child that saved him from the draft ended up retiring as a Sergent Major in the Army.
Interesting, of all my nephews and nieces, About a third of them ended up serving 4 or more years in the military. I did my time in the USAF and my brother in the USN.

Well I was 10 years old. I assume school had finished by late June and summer vacation was on. Earlier probably in April I watched the Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup on a black and white tv. I know our family went to see the Expo 67 World’s Fair in Montreal later that summer as well. I had a few childhood friends from the street I lived on and we often played war in the ravine behind our school.

Not as bad as 68.

That summer I went camping with several classmates in a national park, but don’t remember exactly when in the summer. I seem to recall “Ode to Billy Joe” and “Light My Fire” being on the radio when we were traveling. Both were 1967 hits.
