HSI and FBI speak on illegal immigration raid at Gulf Shores High School

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The FBI and HSI are speaking out after 36 illegal immigrants were arrested at the new Gulf Shores High School.

“Once the members of this task force arrived on the scene of the location, it turned into instant chaos,” recalled PJ Lavoie, acting assistant special agent in charge for HSI in Alabama. “At that point there was two vehicles. Several folks jumped into vehicles, plowed through the fence.”

All of this happened in broad daylight. Federal agents came in hot on the site of the new Gulf Shores High School. Witnesses catching all of it on camera

“They were showing the roof hatch access door, but the people that were hiding on the roof screwed it shut,” said one witness who wanted to remain anonymous. “So they (federal agents) sent a drone up into the air to keep watch on all of them while they figure out a way to get up to the roof. And they used a lift, and as they were coming up on the roof, those guys threw the rope down to get down.”

The FBI confirmed out of the 36 arrests, 20 have a criminal history, 4 had final orders of deportation and 7 had reentered the country after deportation.

FOX10 News first reported these arrests after viewers submitted footage and called in. We learned Rabren General Contractors is overseeing the project, which is funded by taxpayers.

Alabama law requires contractors who are building anything funded by taxpayers to use e-verify, which is a software that allows employers to see the eligibility of their employees. According to special agent in charge for HSI in Alabama and Georgia Steven Schrank, large corporations aren’t always to blame.

“They often bring in many subcontractors in order to complete the work so we do find that large corporations often do attempt to follow the rules and utilize E-Verify is at their own employees in workforce are legal, but then they bring in sub-contractors that don’t follow the same standards and knowingly employee illegal aliens,” Schrank said.

Special Agent Lavoie had a strong message to anyone who hires illegal immigrants.

“Anyone that employs illegal aliens,” he said. “We’ll be coming.”

In addition to the arrests, the FBI said one illegal immigrant attacked an agent and will be charged with assault.

It's a LOT misleading. It was a construction site at a school.

So a ‘building site’ and not a ‘functioning school with students’
