You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days.  If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

But down 1,100 slaves

About a minute. I guessed the one letter words, and the common three letter word, and that gave me the familiar author's name and after that it was just typing.

When I posted it I thought it would be a tough one, and maybe it is without Hal, but with Hal it’s a snap. I’d say everyone should beat 90 seconds.

Check you email.

The one letter words and common three letter words give you the author’s first name, and enough of the rest of the author’s name to fill it in. Without the author’s name, for instance if you just gave initials, it would have been very tough.

Didn’t need Hal to do this one. The two 1-letter words were obvious and I always try the 3-letter words for the common word.

Hal is handy for long quotes as it saves so much time of trial and error (writing and erasing) when I’m in a hurry to be someplace other than here.

LOL. I had never seen that monstrosity so clearly! Hard to see just how ugly it was at 70 MPH.

A Union Artillery Battery had six cannon, 72 Horses, and 144 men. It took six horses to pull a cannon, each cannon was accompanied by a caisson, also pulled by six horses. In combat each cannon was attended by 12 men, and each horse by one man to prevent it from bolting. The caissons accompanied the cannon, to prevent shoot and scoot.

A Southern officer said if he had Southern Calvary and Northern Artillery, he could lick the whole world.

Not cello. It’s Mountain Dulcimer practice. 😀🎶
