What you see above the surface of the water is just a fraction of what is hidden below.I agree. However, that doesn't explain why the thing is round and why it hasn't melted since black absorbs heat and it should have melted.

I hope they will send some scientists or prospectors to bring back samples. They can then figure what caused the color, and approximately when that happened. Maybe they can backtrack the original location of the berg and make a big find of some sort.

A sample of the ice would be helpful. Maybe a sub-glacial volcanic eruption at the point of origin? Maybe the glacier formed in a muck pool along the coast and picked up the color? Hope someone tests soon!
