From the Beatles touching down in America and sending fans into a frenzy, to underdog Cassius Clay (soon to be known as Muhammad Ali) shocking the world by defeating Sonny Liston, 1964 was undeniably electric. It was the year that saw a huge win in the fight for equality as President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, while a little show called “Jeopardy!” made its debut on TV. Everywhere you looked, history was being made — and these photos capture it all.

John Astin, “Gomez” is still around at 95.
He was the only one I liked on that show.
Horrible confession time:
After the fire, I’ve only got streaming channels.
Sometimes, I watch the free Ed Sullivan show channel for hours.
/don’t judge me
😜
Love was such an easy game to play in 1964,
‘64 WAS a Great Year!
I graduated FSU, successfully completed the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy. Began USN flight training, soloed the T-34 and, subsequently, fell in love with Naval Aviation!
Did not pay much attention to Popular Culture —too busy!
61 years later, I am still in love with Naval Aviation and still do not “do” Popular Culture!
Where peaceful protests were actually peaceful, people weren’t obese and dressed like slobs, and performers actually and talent and performed.
To many pictures of LBJ though, IMO.
That makes us the same age.
I remember being happy that school was dismissed early and when I got home my mom yelled at me for being excited because the reason was, the president got shot.
I pretended to be sad but didn't see how that affected me much. I didn't know him and didn't think it had anything to do with my life.
I remember the space program as I was interested in it even at that age.
I was older (probably9-10) when I found out we were at war in Viet Nam. I kept hearing reports of deaths and injuries on the field daily on the radio and finally asked my dad why they kept talking about it.
He told me then that we were at war.
I did find that sobering. And I NEVER approved of the way our troops were treated on their return home. Typical nasty leftists.
… to underdog Cassius Clay (soon to be known as Muhammad Ali) …Poor guy; went from being named after one of the USA’s greatest abolitionists to renaming himself after two of the most prolific owners of black slaves, the former of whom even said that the devil resembled a black man.
Actually HAD talent.....
I was a Gomez groupie.
😆
lbj was a JACKA$$ !!!
When JFK was assassinated I was in My playpen and Mom was folding laundry, We were in the TV room and I remember Mom freaking out and crying. I remember the picture on the TV. It was JFK being shot. I didn’t know what was wrong just the same picture over and over and Mom crying.
A few years later I was able to put things together when I saw the video of Him being shot then I knew why Mom was crying.
I was just over 2 years old when JFK was killed. I remember the scene in My mind clearly- looking over the top rail of the playpen, the B & W TV in the wood cabinet, Mom with the laundry basket and the folded stack of laundry and Her crying. It’s still clearly visible in My mind to this day.
Worst year ever, except for 1965.
Dance like nobody is watching.
Gosh, I loved the Addams Family. All of them. And the new movies with Raul Julia (RIP). And the new Wednesday series with Jenna Ortega.
They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky.
fight for equality as President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law
The democrats voted against it. The republicans voted for it.
I missed all this. Mostly sleeping, crying, feeding!!!
Thanks for not killing me, mom!
I still like “feeding!!!”
A friend from church is retired Air Force. After he returned from Vietnam he was assigned to be LBJ’s helicopter pilot. He told me LBJ could go from being your favorite uncle to Satan himself in the snap of a finger.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me...
ummm... when I’m (in) ‘64? :-)
