Democrat moves to prevent Trump from striking Iran without congressional approval [Tim Kaine]
The Hill ^ | 6/16/2025 | Sarah Fortinsky

Posted on 06/17/2025 10:35:33 AM PDT by simpson96

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) introduced a resolution Monday seeking to prevent the U.S. from getting involved in a military conflict with Iran without congressional approval.

The resolution reaffirms existing law, directing the president to end any use of the U.S. armed forces “for hostilities” against Iran “unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or specific authorization for use of military force against Iran.”

The resolution expresses concern about the potential for U.S. involvement in the escalating military crisis between Iran and Israel, but it specifies that the U.S. can still defend itself “from imminent attack.”

“It is not in our national security interest to get into a war with Iran unless that war is absolutely necessary to defend the United States,” Kaine, who sits on the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, said in a statement.

“I am deeply concerned that the recent escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran could quickly pull the United States into another endless conflict,” he continued. “The American people have no interest in sending servicemembers to fight another forever war in the Middle East.”

“This resolution will ensure that if we decide to place our nation’s men and women in uniform into harm’s way, we will have a debate and vote on it in Congress,” the Democratic senator added.

The resolution is privileged, so the Republican-controlled Senate cannot block it from consideration or a vote.

Democrats cater to rapists, murderers, kidnappers and now fanatical terrorists. Imagine what Truman and JFK would be thinking? The Democrats have become the party shielding evil just to get some power.

LOL That horse left the barn a long time ago. You can't spend $800 billion a year on the military without giving the President a very long leash.

Plus, as a terrorist supporting state, the AUMF from 9/11 is still in effect.

We're governed by dishonest morons.

What’s the problem with getting Congressional approval? We’re under no immediate threat.

“Plus, as a terrorist supporting state, the AUMF from 9/11 is still in effect.”

I don’t believe in giving ANY administration a blank check. And the record of the wars waged under the cover of the AUMF are no ringing endorsement of using it now.

Not a thing, but the FR demographic is too old to worry about dying in a military conflict.

On June 1, 2025, 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman injured at least a dozen people marching at a gathering to support Israeli hostages in Gaza in Boulder, Colorado, shouting “Free Palestine” as he attacked demonstrators with Molotov cocktails and a homemade flamethrower, before being arrested at the scene.[1] The Egyptian-born Soliman entered the U.S. in 2022 as a non-immigrant visitor, after spending 17 years in Kuwait, and the following year received a two-year work authorization that expired in March 2025. I’m only pointing out it’s still legally in effect, not commenting on the advisability of leaving it that way.

this is fantastic, this will make some people who isn’t into war, change their mind just to spite the liberal.

you know if liberal is against it, we should all go for it.
I feel like that’s how some people do their ‘research’ just do what liberals doesn’t like. (of course that’d be correct 99% of the time, still need to watch for that 1% when they want to legalize oxygen for breathing)

Let kaine do it. Then trump can say “well, I guess Israel is on its own... because of Democrats.”

“FR demographic is too old to worry about dying in a military conflict.”

Largely true, but some of us are recall eligible until the mandatory retirement age or for life in special none combat fields unless you renounce your commissions. I am no where near mandatory retirement age and also am in a critical need field. Holding a master’s in remote sensing and a double post graduate NGA Geointelligence cert and professional cert. It should be obvious why there is no limit on people like mine’s recall.

Nobody on the other thread wants to touch this, but:

10% of Isrealis (about one million people) are American citizens (dual). Should we protect them or tell them they are on their own?

This guy failed to read the Constitution, article II and federal law. It states within:

The War Powers Resolution requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30-day withdrawal period, without congressional authorization for use of military force (AUMF) or a declaration of war by the United States. So, can their little resolution do anything? Uhhh, no.

They know they don’t have the votes to pass the measure, so it is being done just for the p.r. affect.
