Russia says it is sending more Ukrainian soldiers’ bodies to border amid spat over prisoner swap

Russia said Sunday that trains carrying more bodies of Ukrainian soldiers were due to depart toward the Ukrainian border, escalating a spat with Kyiv over a prisoner of war swap.

“I can tell you that in just an hour, repatriation trains carrying the bodies of military personnel will also begin to move,” Lieutenant General Aleksandr Zorin said on Sunday, according to TASS news agency.

The transfer of “more than 6,000 bodies” was agreed earlier this week during peace talks in Istanbul, Zorin said, blaming Ukraine for failing to “confirm receipt” of other bodies of Ukrainian soldiers which Russia claims it transferred to an exchange zone on Saturday.

Kyiv firmly rejected the accusations, with Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, saying that his country was strictly adhering to the agreements reached at peace talks in Istanbul.

Because upon receipt of the bodies and confirmation of their identity, the Ukrainian government must pay death benefits to their families amounting to several billion USD for all the corpses awaiting return. The Ukrainian government is basically wholly funded by the US at this point but the money is still tight, thus the foot-dragging over this.

The reason the exchange of the war dead is being delayed and/or prevented by Zelensky is because there are so many more dead Ukrainians than Russians.

If the reality is exposed, it harms the chances of Ukraine getting money from us and will enrage the Ukrainian population.

“Yesterday trucks packed with the dead bodies of Ukrainian armed forces soldiers stood all day at the border between Belarus and Ukraine, a body exchange was supposed to take place. They were supposed to come and retrieve these bodies but no one from the Ukrainian side ever showed up, they waited all day but no one came from the other side. No one wanted or was willing to collect the bodies. I think this is quite telling it clearly shows how the Ukrainian authorities actually treat their fallen soldiers and probably all the money has already been embezzled and now no one wants to pay compensation to the families of these dead soldiers.”

The issue is money. Zelensky promised families $XXXX if there were any deaths in that family in battle. It was quite a lot, to induce volunteering.

So much that 6000 corpses would be 15% of the Defense ministry’s budget. That money does not exist.

Regardless, I think this is being handled badly. Take the corpses. Slow walk the identify process and thus the pay out. Refusing the bodies refuses family closure.

Or just renege on the promise of money. That would be acceptable optics . . . “we don’t have that money, but these families must have closure” so we are suspending all payouts to some time in the future.

Instead, they are choosing the wrong path.

Don’t worry, Fred Merz said he would handle it.

Or we could be like a goofy zeeper and say it is for US taxpayers to pay because somehow we owe Europe as we are a world leader. LOL

Ukraine has been given billions and billions and they never figured this cost into their budget. Can’t ya just feel all that fuzzy freedom and democracy? 🤣🤣

That is what happens when political crooks hit the road to the borders with suitcases of stolen booty.

Ukraine’s inability to pay the bills when they come due can’t be popular with its people.

Regardless of who’s to blame for the shortfall.

Resumption of national elections there...who can say what will happen? Trump will probably want MAGA-vetted U.S. election observers posted nationwide. Not necessarily to prevent fraud, but first and foremost to document it for posterity.

Saw a blurb last night unconfirmed.

The Graham sanctions bill . . . Trump says the bill provides the president the power to impose elevated sanctions on Russia.

It does not impose them. It empowers Trump to impose them. This is much much less severe than I thought. It will not create a veto override battle.

Anyone hear the details?
