I was in the Air Force stationed in Germany and watched the race in the NCO Club on a black and white TV. A lot of beer was consumed that I remember. The club went crazy. No one could believe a horse could be that dominate. Some things you never forget where you were at when it happened. The 1973 Belmont Stakes is one of them. I’ve watched the replay hundreds of times and it never gets old.

It was the greatest horse race in history, without a close second.

I remember how exciting and exceptional he was, but I didn’t realize he’d stand out so far above all breeding and competitors since.

It’s been 52 years since Secretariat won the triple crown and set records in each race which still stand today, that alone proves he was the greatest horse of all time and there isn’t a close second

If you’re interested in today’s Belmont. It should be a repeat of the muddy Derby pace meltdown.

I have family in the racing business so I hear about Secretariat often. In ‘73 I was but an egg, myself, and yet I understand. The video is thrilling. We should be grateful the technology was there to capture the event, or it would be — only legendary.
Nietzsche (sorry, I wish someone else had written it but it was Nietzsche) wrote:
“Grant me just one glimpse of something perfect, completely finished, happy, powerful, triumphant.”
Secretariat was that kind of phenomenon.

It was a spectacle of a lifetime. Hardly a race at all.

Nietzsche, paradoxically, was one of the few who understood the essence of Christianity, but he rejected it.

Hardly a race at all.

Oh I think he was racing, for the sheer thrill of it.

It’s been half a century. It is likely that no other total freak like that will ever be born.

It was a remarkable moment! I’ve re-watched it countless times as well. I was living in Boston and a group of friends were sitting in my living room with fingers crossed and as he opened his stride and took off we cheered like crazy. Lots of open windows in late June- we heard neighbors erupting - much merriment and mayhem followed!

He was one in a million.

There are very possibly horses out there with similar greatness in them but that go unrecognized and unbankrolled.

From X:

Secretariat. 50 years ago today. (Video at link)

Jack Nicklaus watched the finish at home, pounding the ground and weeping. He later wondered why.

Heywood Hale Broun told him,

“All your life, in your game, you’ve been striving for perfection. At Belmont, you saw it.”

A normal horse’s heart weighs approx. 8.5 pounds. Secretriat’s weighed 22 pounds and his triple crown rival, Sham, his weighed 18 pounds....

Not sure about that. I have seen greatness before Big Red, the horse’s name was Hoist the Flag. Also like Red, two year old colt champion and ironically both DQed at the Champaign Stakes at Saratoga.

Hoist the Flag was being tuned up for the Kentucky Derby and broke his leg while walking on the track.

Jean Crougey (sp) who road triple crown winner Seattle Slew was Hoist’s training jockey and said he would have defeated Slew or any other horse, he was that good.

I was at the track the day Hoist broke his foot, later in the day some veteran horsemen were still weeping. Racing luck, sometimes it is with you and sometimes it is not.

The NY tracks had a race caller in those days named Fred Capposela (sp). His call of that race was excellent right up to the 8th pole when he uttered: they will not catch the champ today!

Crudo for me. Best finisher. Race this year only 1.25 miles and it is run at Saratoga.
