For more than a year, Russian forces have made incremental but glacial gains, seizing roughly 1,500 square miles of Ukrainian territory in 2024 – the equivalent of 0.7 percent of the country’s total landmass. But the cost in human blood has been enormous. According to Ukrainian estimates, Russia suffered 434,000 casualties last year: roughly 270 killed or wounded for every square mile seized.
Now, however, momentum may be shifting.
Last month, Russian forces advanced at the fastest pace since last November, seizing an average of 5.5 square miles a day in May – double April’s rate, according to DeepState, a Ukrainian open-source intelligence project.
Commanders are now hoping for breakthrough, particularly in the Donbas – the historically Russian-speaking region central to the Kremlin’s territorial claims. Most of the provinces that make up the region are already under Russian military occupation, with Putin’s forces controlling 99 percent of Luhansk and approximately 77 percent of Donetsk.
The capture of Donetsk’s remaining unoccupied cities and industrial heartlands is likely to be the offensive’s main objective. Analysts expect that Russia will make inroads, but few believe it can seize the entire region.
Seasonal strategies
The timing of the offensive is no coincidence. Summer foliage offers better cover to advancing troops, despite drawbacks such as increased dust visibility and the difficulties of hiding movement from thermal cameras.

Thank goodness! As I’ve said before, Putin needs to stop fighting like McClellan and to embrace the “bloody arithmetic”. End this ASAP before we’re further drawn in. Every additional month we keep shoveling the cannon fodder means another 50,000 unnecessary dead Ukes.

Putin is losing control of the frontline airspace. In recent days both helicopters and F16s have been used in combined arms operations on the front. This is something new and likely made possible by Ukrainian pilots gettingbetter with the F16 and knocking out A50 AWACS planes that are currently not replacable by the Russian side. Blinded they cannot operate and cannot defend. Russia appears to be down to its last 2 or 3 A50s. I suspect that has more to do with its “revenge strikes” being smaller and less effective than anticipated. Meanwhile western Europe is ramping up production of virtually everything. Trump is the guy sitting with fewer and fewer cards, and shrinking leverage over all parties in the conflict. In a war of attrition the EUs vastly larger economy will ultimately overwhelm Russia’s manpower advantage if they have the political will to stay the course without US involvement.
Another revelation as to the outcome of this war?
More like a Tragekrieg than a real war. I don’t think anyone is reporting or even knows completely what’s going on...just a lot of FUD and lies.
