As a humorous aside, MTG is now trashing the bill she voted for while admitting she didn't read it.

I can't stand MTG, but the BBB is 5593 pages long, and you can be damn sure Trump himself didn't get past page one because he doesn't like to read. And if he can support it so strongly despite having not read it, why must others? You could also be damn sure that nobody else in Congress has read the entire bill cover to cover either. Yet, Trump and all his allies support it anyway. So, any humorous asides cut both ways equally.

Personally, if you were going to impute an obligation to read the bill to either side, you would think that those advocating the bill be passed have the obligation to have read the whole thing. Opponents could oppose the bill simply because it's too large and unmanageable to But it's not really a reasonable requirement. Legislation like this doesn't read coherently start to finish. It contains all sorts of cross-references, inter-lineated edits on various pages located in other sections of federal law, etc.. I've read bills that are only 5 to 10 pages long that can take many hours to figure out because of all the cross references. So nobody reads it front to back, and if they claim they did, they were just skimming.

The reality is that a bill like this is analyzed in sections, with various legislative summaries put together for each section. So, the members of Congress and their aides read the summaries of the various sections to get the bottom line on various spending items and other provisions.

I mean, we have people on Free Republic staking out all sorts of hardline positions on this bill, and none of us have read it either. That doesn't mean you still can't have a relatively informed opinion if you do some digging.

If only Rand Paul knew someone who could cut the fat out of the bill.

Oh, I definitely agree. The publicity stunt of planting an enormous stack of paper and mocking the writers of the bill is a well-worn and over-used trope. It’s just that hearing it from a Republican on a Republican bill is novel.

(And her complaint had to do with a limitation on state regulation of AI, not the common objection that the bill will vastly widen the deficit.)

You really think that?

Do you follow President Trump’s social media? On any given day he’ll post attacks on his perceived enemies two or three times.

How much more irritating would it be to him for a man he praised to the stars to turn around and trash a bill that he himself labeled “beautiful”?

Yes. The debt limit will be reached in 3 months. If it is not raised in this bill it needs 60 votes so that the Democrats will have leverage to get many expensive add ons.

There are two issues, debt limit & debt. The debt is already rising. There is money in the bill for the wall, border enforcement and a downpayment on the golden dome.
The putative increase in the debt by the bill is a political fiction spread by the completely democrat run CBO. It is meant to frighten people, provide talking points and stymie Trump’s plan to revitalize the economy.
Much of the “debt” is the cost of keeping the tax cuts. It is duplicitous to call that debt especially since the tax cuts have increased federal revenue since they were enacted.
The CBO doesn’t give credit for the ~4% growth that will be generated by the pro business aspects of the bill (based on similar initiatives in Trump’s 1st term), tax cuts or to the tariff revenue.
IOW the estimate by the CBO is a con job. They have been vastly wrong with every past estimate.

It’s not the first time they’ve done it so there’s no reason to think that they won’t do it again.

No, I don’t do social media.

FR is as close as it gets.

I love Trump, but that BBB is a pile of crap.
Methinks that the Trumpster backs Elon and will use this to his advantage. Let’s hope so. As for the DemocRATz, eff them and the sewer they crawled out of.

xxxxxxxxx

funny how things work in DC isn’t it??

just this morning on the news, they were playing video sound bytes of shumer & jefferies spouting off on how much they agree with musk!

(remind me: isn’t musk’s position that the BBB doesn’t cut enough pork waste & fraud out of the BBB??)

so now the Dems are for cutting more pork waste & fraud out of the BBB??

The point of bundling in one bill was that extending to permanence the 2017 tax level alone would have been met with an avalanche of deficit explosion coverage. It is still getting that coverage, but the spending stuff is intended to combat it.

Examine the math. Expiring the 2017 tax levels and having them rise back to previous levels is going to add to over $400B per year. X10 is $4T. That’s pure math. Pre Laffer curve stuff.

Before you choose to worship at the Laffer curve altar, do the analysis yourself. Don’t go looking for some other text that says things, because someone else said something. Go get the tax revenue numbers from 1970s and 1980s — CAREFULLY ADJUST THEM FOR POPULATION GAIN AND INFLATION — and then decide if tax revenue really rose with lower tax rates.

But that’s all somewhat pointless. There is very little in spending cut in the BBB. The DOGE cuts are not in it BECAUSE THEY CANNOT BE IN IT. They are not from discretionary spending. They are in agencies with mandatory spending and they do not qualify for Reconciliation.

There is no solution to the problem. The debt has become too high to fix without society destroying measures, like default on all government instruments and then executing — physically killing — anyone who brings suit to recover whatever loss ($31T) they sustain from their government bond holdings having been confiscated.

The house has changed it so much It’s no longer what Trump proposed. By the time the Senate’s done with it it’ll look like something the Democrats came up with

You mean 9 billion and that’s being sent over to the senate by Trump. God knows how much will be saved after the senate rips it apart.

If only Trump didn’t go to the house and convince them to pass it. I bet he wishes he didn’t and let it die and start over.

They go with what’s in front of them. They can use a hopeful 4 percent growth until it’s factual.

Exactly.

It’s not the fault of whoever is President that spending, tax cuts, and who-knows-what-else has to be lumped together in one giant bill - that’s the fault of the Legislature.

The Legislature was supposed to represent the wishes of We The People, but instead, it has buried us in Thirty Seven Trillion Dollars of Debt!!

Some Presidents have rubber-stamped this and others have resisted it - but the fact is that the Constitution gives the power of the purse to the Legislature - and the Legislature is the only branch that can stop this train wreck.

President Trump badly needs the tax cuts and some other good things that are buried in this bill, and the only way he can get them is by polishing up this turd and pretending he likes it.

Believe me, he knows perfectly well it’s a turd, and that Elon Musk is right to call it that. Behind closed doors President Trump is saying the same thing, and I guarantee he’s is not angry at Elon Musk for telling the truth about this huge turd that is being squeezed out of Congress’s bowels.
