Key climate target of airline decarbonisation 'in peril': IATA

New Delhi (AFP) – The airline industry's flagship goal of decarbonising by 2050 is now "in peril" due to climate-sceptic policies, including those of US President Donald Trump, the leading airline association IATA warned on Sunday.

The emergence of leaders favouring fossil fuels and recent regulatory rollbacks are "obviously a setback... it does imperil success on the 2050 horizon", Marie Owens Thomsen, the International Air Transport Association's senior vice president for sustainability, told reporters.

"But I don't think it's going to halt or reverse progress. I think it will just slow progress," she said at the IATA annual industry conference in India.

Trump's Republican administration is supporting the development of fossil fuels in contrast to his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, who had massively supported the production of renewable aviation fuels through tax credits.

To achieve net-zero emissions, airlines rely on non-fossil sources known as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

However, SAF biofuels are still three to four times more expensive than petroleum-based jet fuel.

"Another problem, which is related, is the fact that oil is so cheap," Owens Thomsen said. "I think that also diminishes the sense of urgency that people have."

A barrel of Brent North Sea crude, the international benchmark, stands below $65 as a result of Trump's tariffs, his call to "drill baby drill" and especially a decision by OPEC+ to hike crude output quotas.

This represents an immediate boon for airlines, whose fuel costs represent between a quarter and a third of operating expenses.

“decarbonising by 2050 is now “in peril” due to climate-sceptic policies, including those of US President Donald Trump”

IOW, rest of the world has no impact, only USA; so, Trump’s fault ... i guess it’s also Trump’s fault that air flight can’t be powered by batteries or solar panels ...

Let’s spend money where it matters: Most illegal move to large democrat cities and go on welfare - then work under the table.

If we want to reduce the debt more money needs to go to exporting illegals back to their home countries.

LMAO

Those who haven’t fallen for the lie of radical environmentalists who want us to believe humans can change the climate.

Fools. They completely ignored my low carbon footprint suggestion.

First airliner to fall out of the sky due to loss of power and this initiative is over.

Why does biofuel not emit carbon? Hint: It does.

Burning enough biofuel to produce one megajoule of energy gives off the equivalent of 39g of CO2, whereas for fossil fuels that figure is 75.1g. This does not take into account the total carbon used to grow, fertilize, convert, and transport the plant based biofuel.

When all of the footprints are added up, biofuel produces 1.8 times the carbon emissions as hydrocarbon fuel (I refuse to call it fossil fuel).

But, please. Don’t tell anybody. It will mess up their fantasy and cut off their gravy train. And they better not complain about not enough farmland and starving populations.

I have an idea. Just switch the engines off when the plane is coasting. Works for cars at stoplights [almost totaled a rental car in anger at discovering this “feature” which shut the engine off just before the light turned green. Do you know what happens when you floor an engine that is off and trying to start. Car stopped in the middle of the intersection.

SMDH! A billion here, a billion there. To get to the non existent “netzero”. Kinda makes me wish for the good old ice age by 2030 days.

I was just looking at some new vehicle specs and it looks like just about all the new stuff has the NON optional shut on/off “feature”. Some seem to have a disable mode but you have to select every time you start back up. Oh well.

There is never any “settled” science. All science must be challengeable and reproducible.

Yep. I don’t know who said it first, but this is a very insightful statement:

“If it’s science, it’s not settled. If it’s settled, it’s not science.”

Decarbonisation? All life on Earth is carbon based, why don’t these people tell the truth that the decarbonisation they truly desire is at least 50% of all mankind……..of course they want to be the ones who determine which 50% get decarbonised.

The USAF and USN were mandated by Obama-Biden-Harris (and left-over Bush appointees) to burn a large percent of its jet fuel from “sustainable resources” - at three times the cost per gallon of conventional purified jet fuels!

Illegal aliens release much less CO2 in their home country. Save the planet, deport 30 million illegal aliens.
