New Yawkas have the most confident sounding US accents, study finds

Do I amuse you?

The Big Apple boasts the most confident sounding accents in the US, a recent study found.

The unique tone, marked by dropped “R”s, shifted vowels (like coffee becoming “caw-fee”) and tough talk — often thought of as a specific Brooklyn or Bronx sound, is particularly associated with working-class, multi-generational New Yawkas.

Think Joe Pesci’s “Funny how” in “Goodfellas” and Chazz Palminteri’s iconic “Now youse can’t leave” in “A Bronx Tale” — or anything Fran Drescher.

“There’s a rhythm to it that cuts through small talk and its placement and resonance tends to sit further forward giving it a brighter sound — which tends to resonate louder in most spaces,” voice coach Molly Parker told The Post.

My wife’s from North Carolina. She doesn’t have much of an accent unless she’s talking to her mother or other family on the phone, then the accent really comes out and takes a day or two to fade again.

I feel like that when I listen to Ben Shapiro. He talks much faster than I can listen. I have to slow his podcasts to about 1/3 normal speed.

The Yankees are coming!

True Nutmeggers have no accent, but yes, the NY, Masshole, VT, NH, ME accents are a bit much. Bronx and Boston are the epicenters of linguistic ear stink on the North American continent.

Same here, I find the speed-talking fad to be most irritating, and usually just turn it off.
It has spread through radio land, and I quit listening to those who do it.

Totally agree. Even if it's something I might otherwise be interested in, I can't stand the speed-talking.

“…the most confident sounding accents…”

“Sounding”. There’s a reason for that; it’s exactly what the speaker intends. Then there’s having confidence IN and that goes to southerners I’d say.

My mother was from Massachusetts. We lived in California. One time she asked a store clerk where she could find “party supplies.” The clerk directed her to an aisle with toilet paper.

You left out Rhode Island. I have lived in Texas 14 years and every person I speak to, and I do mean every, askes me where I am from. Most guess New York, Close but no cigar. I was born in Rhode Island and lived there until I was 62. Noone ever said I had an accent. Now in Texas EVERYONE asks. I drop “”R”s” in some words while adding them to other words where they don’t belong. I say Moot Zar Rella, monni gort, rigotta, and cabba ghoul. My son in law finds my accent annoying. The other day I used the words, part and pot in a sentence and they sounded exactly alike. He’s from Michigan, does everyone there sound gay?

My mother’s generation, at least locally, called sun glasses
“Dark glasses” or “Colored Glasses.”

My sister told me that on a trip to Florida they stopped somewhere along the way so Mother could get some. She asked the store clerk where the colored glasses were and the clerk took her to the kitchen supplies/drink ware area.

That language, “Autocorrect”, can be troublesome. 😁
