The assassination attempt did not get into western media.
But probably far more important, he has to make noises like this or he could lose Lindsey Graham’s budget vote. And others. He will walk a fine line until that vote is through.

"I'm not happy with what Putin is doing," Trump said. "He's killing a lot of people, and I don't know what the hell happened to Putin. I've known him a long time. Always gotten along with him, but he's sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don't like it at all." He's being as he's always been. I'm no fan of Zelenskyyyyyy, but Trump expressing surprise at Putin behaving like Putin is embarrassing.

Putin was killing civilians before anyone ever took a potshots at him, so he has it coming. It will be well deserved, but it would be more just if he was strung up on a lamp post.
