In a new study, researchers at Purdue University have harnessed the power of advanced computer modeling to unravel the complex reasons why the United States has more tornado activity than any other region in the world.
The study, spearheaded by Dr. Dan Chavas, an associate professor in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, delves into the geographical and climatic factors that make America the country with the strongest, most violent, and numerous tornadoes worldwide...
The United States averages over 1,200 tornadoes every year, a staggering figure that surpasses the total annual twisters of all European countries combined. The country that ranks second, Canada, only averages 100 tornadoes per year.
This prevalence of tornadoes in America has long been assumed to be due to its unique geography, which provides ideal conditions for tornadoes to form...
For decades, meteorologists have hypothesized that the Gulf of Mexico plays a crucial role in forming tornadoes in the United States. The warm, moist air from the Gulf is thought to collide with cooler, drier air crossing over the Rocky Mountains in the west Rockies to create the perfect conditions for severe weather.
Dr. Chavas' team tested this theory using computer models to simulate what would happen if the Gulf of Mexico were replaced with land.
Surprisingly, they found that while the absence of the Gulf shifted the location of severe storms eastward, from the central Great Plains into Illinois, it did not significantly reduce their frequency or intensity.

The cold air coming off the Rockies and meeting the warmer air of the plains. Add the moisture from the Gulf, and we have tornado smoothies.
Two of ‘em and a couple more ready to start.
Tell me it’s not Red Dye #5!
It’s Red Dye #5, isn’t it??
😩
Let me not bother to read it and cut to the chase: Climate change and God hates Donald Trump. You’re welcome.
Diversity in topography is our thing.
Climate strange!
Models are comprised of variables selected by the modeler. Then each variable is assigned a value by the modeler.
Nothing arbitrary there...Garbage in garbage out.
Oddly enough, no. :^o
Tornadoes come with hurricanes. I’ve been through two.
Once, coming up the river where my daughter and SIL had a summer cabin. I was on the porch grilling burgers, when here it came headed right at us. .
I kept grilling burgers. Friend said, “aren’t you afraid?
“No, I said my prayers twice this morning.”
With that, the hurricane made a 90 degree turn, headed for my house where it lifted the corner of the garage and destroyed a house at the end of the street, four houses away.
Similar thing happened when I was vacationing on the coast of Florida.
So, say your prayers and fear not.
The Mediterranean sea is close to Gulf of Mexico. Did they alter the model to evaluate Europe?

In Oklahoma it’s explained that Kansas blows and Texas sucks, therefore we have tornadoes in Oklahoma!! BOOMER!! LOL
You’re right! BRAWNDO.....
and mobile home parks.
At least by the end of the article they are thinking correctly - about mitigation as opposed to prevention
Close in size, yeah, but tough to wangle a grant for that, it’s Europe’s and N. Africa’s problem. :^)
Has abybody ever studied the effect of our highway system?
Every highway is saturated with gigantic trucks, 18-wheelers, doubles, triples, ... travelling at 70-80 mph or more, always on the right side of the roads.
How much vorticity is created by these monsters? And it’s all in a counter-clockwise rotational moment?
Vorticity doesn’t die. It doesn’t go away or dissipate.
Just wondering???
I will suffer the tornadoes to be spared european totalitarian socialism. We are starting to rollback some of the socialism here too.
A friend use to say: ‘Just because it doesn’t have wheels doesn’t mean it’s not a trailer.’
Spent a summer job in Boulder, Co. strapping down trailers to keep them from tumbling away from the Front Range.
Should have had Buttigieg study this.
