Size DOES matter. I'm always amazed when I do cultural research on different trends how absolutely massive servings are today compared to 50 years ago. Colas used to routinely come in 6 ounce bottles, and that was considered a normal serving, and only an infrequent treat, not a beverage with every meal.
Plate meals were also very meager compared to today. Europeans are basically still there.

Europeans are basically still there. Except for the Germans! When I was in Germany, the restaurants served me huge portions! I was embarrassed to leave anything on the plate! I ordered calamari once and they brought out a PLATTER FULL!..............

All these burger joints have those 2000+ calorie triple beef, bacon, cheese, guac/bbq burgers. Eating that is like eating an anvil.
