A monument to Soviet dictator Josef Stalin erected in Moscow's metro is stirring debate, with some Russians welcoming it as a historical tribute, but others saying it's a mistake to commemorate someone who presided over so much suffering.

Nearly 700,000 people were executed in Stalin's 1937-38 Great Terror amid show trials and purges of his real and perceived enemies. Many other Soviet citizens were sent to the Gulag, a grim network of prison camps, spread across the world's largest country.
The Moscow metro said in a statement that the new version of the monument, which was presented to the public on May 15, was one of its "gifts" to passengers to mark the 90th anniversary of the sprawling, ornate and famously efficient transport system.
The work's original title, "Gratitude of the People to the Leader and Commander,” was dedicated to Stalin's role in delivering victory for the Soviet Union in World War Two

The "paranoid" claim is bull. It's just another Leftist dodge seeking to explain Stalin's brutality without mentioning his adherence to Communist ideology.
Communism kills. It began with Lenin, was amped up by Stalin, copied by Bela Kun, and practiced assiduously by Mao and Pol Pot. It's part of the nature of the beast. Even a punk like Bill Ayers could predict over 25 million Americans would have to be eliminated when they took over.
Every historian and memoirist, from left to right, from Khrushchev to Solzhenitsyn has talked about Stalin’s paranoia and suspicion of everyone. I think I’ll take their word over an anonymous poster on the internet.

The man who industrialized Soviet Russia, enslaved millions for enormous national projects, imprisoned, tortured and murdered at least 20 million of his citizens, who caused a man-made famine that killed millions, ran a terror state, filled the Gulags with millions who died there, signed a non-aggression pack with the Nazis, supplied the Nazis with war and raw materials for their war machine, sapped the energy and motivation of his people all the while keeping them in line with the NKVD, SMERSH, OGPU, propaganda control, killed (”Purged”) his general staff just before the Nazis invaded Russia, left his nation open for invasion, lied, concealed and betrayed Eastern Europe, caused the death of yet another 20+ million in WWII...the list goes on and on.

It’s easy to celebrate Stalin’s “accomplishments” when you didn’t have to live through it. Like worrying about getting that knock on the door in the middle of the night.

I think Mr. Dfwgator got it right when he said that Stalin won the war. This is the reason why he is still being venerated by many Russians (not all).
As a tyrant, he might have been somewhat less bloodthirsty than Hitler…but not by much. He was a horrific tyrant 😞, dreadfully cruel, and the blood of millions is on his hands. Not anyone else‘s.
Yes, and he was diagnosed with paranoia by famous psychiatrist Vladimir Bekhterev https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Bekhterev . This came on top of the murderous ideology he followed - as has already been pointed out in this thread.
