COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A federal trial started in Denver on Monday for two people accused of staging a burning cross and defacing a campaign sign to allegedly boost attention around a then-candidate’s race for office.
Leading up to the 2023 Colorado Springs mayoral election, a photo circulated showing a racial slur written across a campaign sign for Yemi Mobolade, and a burning cross placed in front. Federal prosecutors charged three suspects, saying they each had roles in staging the scene to look like a hate crime in order to gain support for Mobolade, who is now the city’s first elected Black mayor.
Derrick Bernard Jr. and Ashley Blackcloud are on trial this week. A third suspect in the case, Deanna West, pleaded guilty to maliciously conveying false information earlier this year. West is listed as one of the government’s potential witnesses in Bernard and Blackcloud’s trial, according to court documents.
Mayor Mobolade and his wife, Abbey, are listed as victims in the court documents. They, along with Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez, could be called testify according to court records.
Mayor Mobolade has insisted he had nothing to do with the alleged hoax, despite one of the suspect’s claims that the mayor was involved in the plan. A spokesperson for his office declined to comment in regards to trial starting on Monday
Screenshots of text messages between one of the suspects and Mayor Mobolade are listed as evidence in the case filings.
Trial is expected to wrap up by Friday, according to court records.
Bernard has also been found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2019 death of William Underwood, an aspiring rapper in Colorado Springs.
Of course Mobolade was the payee for the deed. These people suck.

Reminds me of the Jussie Smollett case - tons of evidence against him, yet he insists to this day he was attacked by "Trump supporting White Supremacists."
This mayor will go the same route - and scream "racism" all the way to the end - which I hope is jail time.
