It use to be used in technical journals to help explain complex thoughts. Now journal editors insist on authors using fourth grade level text. Then again today journal authors only have fourth grade thoughts and results.

The thought came to me about the autographs and early apographs that are not even in in cursive. Leaving that, without question addition of punctuation is not merely translation; such activity must inherently call forth interpretation, but under whose hermeneutic?
