Recently met a young man in his 20s at a business event - noted his name was “Standish”

I asked him, half-joking, “so are you related to Myles Standish of the Mayflower?”

I was surprised that he immediately knew what I was talking about and said “yeah, that’s what my grandparents say. He’s like my 9th great grandfather or something...”

America lives....

LEGACY !

a forgotten concept.

Proverbs 22:1

“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”

I’m descended from both Warren and Cooke, as well as Cooke’s son John who was too young to sign.

The Cookes, especially John, seem to have respected God and been suspicious of everyone else, while treating them respectfully. My kind of folk.

There are so many branches of the family tree that end in question marks in New England that it wouldn’t surprise me if I’m descended from some of the others as well.

Louis L’Amour has a nice line about “Ancestors are for people who haven’t done anything themselves”, but that has to be balanced with a realization that formation matters, and a lack of formation/heritage is a handicap, even if it potentially can be overcome.

The Mayflower Compact was a difinition of a Communist organization..equal work and equal distribution of the fruits of the work. Mayor Bradford tore it up because it was not working at all. He said I am going to give you a plot of land and on that land you and your family will survive or die.
The colony flurished under this pride of ownership and benefiting from their own labor.
If this sound familiar, it is the basic definition of the Free Enterprise system that has made the America we know today!

Thanks! Isn't it wonderful that English written 325 years ago is still fresh, readable and understandable?

That is such a simple compact among the pilgrims to set forth how they will be governed. They gave themselves the power to create their own laws "for the general good of the Colony."

Why didn't they arrive with such governance matters already worked out? Because they were stranded outside Virginia’s legal jurisdiction (their destination was Virginia). Tensions arose among the settlers, as some non-Separatists questioned the group’s authority. To establish order and unity, 41 male passengers, led by figures like William Bradford and John Carver, drafted and signed the Mayflower Compact on November 11, 1620, aboard the ship anchored in Provincetown Harbor within the hook at the northern tip of Cape Cod.

The Pilgrims settled at Plymouth (named after their departure port) in December 1620, enduring a brutal first winter that killed nearly half their number due to starvation, cold, and disease. Aid from local Wampanoag, including Squanto, who taught them farming techniques, helped them survive.

The Mayflower Compact guided Plymouth Colony’s governance until it was absorbed by Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691. While modest, the Compact’s emphasis on collective consent influenced later American political thought, including the U.S. Constitution.

“He’s like my 9th great grandfather or something...”

It’s always sad that people usually don’t get interested in their roots and their ancestors until all the living ones have passed. I hope that young man starts his own genealogy research and taps his grandparents wealth of family history and knowledge. But you generally can’t impart that desire to your kids. I’ve studied our family history a lot and documented it, but my kids could not care less.

Those Johnny Come Lately's up in Massachusetts get way too much attention. America really began in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.

America was not founded by a bunch of religious zealots hoping to build a proto communist community. It was founded by farmers and craftsman and go-getters who came for that most American of motives - MAKING MONEY. THE founding vessel was not the Mayflower. It was the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery. Its time Americans learned our real history instead of the propaganda pumped out by New England in the last 150 years.

Yes...I have done a little documenting of family history...I think the young are too busy in their own struggles to be interested in ancestors...I am old...so I kinda understand.

"The Mayflower Compact was a difinition of a Communist organization..equal work and equal distribution of the fruits of the work."

Wow, you need to go back to school. The Mayflower Compact was merely an agreement that the colonists would create their own laws for the betterment of their society. It was a political agreement, not an economic blueprint. The claim that Plymouth Colony "failed" due to equal sharing of the fruits of labor stems from a misinterpretation of its early economic system, not from the Mayflower Compact itself.

The Mayflower Compact is short and easy to read. Take the time to read it and understand what it achieved.

On November 23, 1920, at a commemoration ceremony for the 300th anniversary of the Mayflower landing, then Massachusetts governor Calvin Coolidge, who became the 30th U.S. President a few years later, said the following about the Mayflower Compact:

The compact which they signed was an event of the greatest importance. It was the foundation of liberty based on law and order, and that tradition has been steadily upheld. They drew up a form of government which has been designated as the first real constitution of modern times. It was democratic, an acknowledgment of liberty under law and order and the giving to each person the right to participate in the government, while they promised to be obedient to the laws.

But the really wonderful thing was that they had the power and strength of character to abide by it and live by it from that day to this. Some governments are better than others. But any form of government is better than anarchy, and any attempt to tear down government is an attempt to wreck civilization.

I believe my sister went through the research and obtained her Mayflower society certificate.

A Mayflower Society certificate is a document issued by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) to verify that an individual is a direct lineal descendant of a Mayflower passenger. To receive a certificate, you must provide documentation proving your lineage to a Mayflower passenger who remained in Plymouth Colony. The GSMD has a detailed process for verifying lineage, which may involve gathering birth, marriage, and death certificates, as well as other historical records
