Rubio says potential collapse of Syrian transitional authority may be weeks away

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that the Syrian transitional authority may be weeks away from potential collapse and full-scale civil war, defending US President Donald Trump's decision to lift Syria sanctions and to engage with the Damascus government.

"It is our assessment that, frankly, the transitional authority, given the challenges they're facing, are maybe weeks, not many months, away from potential collapse and a full-scale civil war of epic proportions, basically the country splitting up," Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Yeah, but anytime we try to “manage” a transition, it almost always goes really poorly in the long run. Might be better to let them tear themselves apart, and then help sort the rubble.

There was a time when Syria mattered because Assad refused to allow a nat gas pipeline from Qatar to the Med for transport to Europe. The pipeline was desired back then.

Then Ukraine put a stop to it because it would undercut their transit fee for GAZPROM gas going across to Poland and distribution to Europe. This remains a factor for the future, though Qatar’s LNG and Israel’s new Leviathan field undercuts Syria further.

Syria’s oil fields are insignificant. Output is 100K bpd, which for people who understand oil is nearly nothing (the world consumes about 103 MILLION bpd).

So there is really only one significant impact of Syria entering into a civil war -— the Syrian refugees that streamed into the EU are not going home.

Don’t you mean Russia put a stop to it because it would undercut their GAZPROM gas sales? I don’t see how Ukraine had much influence on Syria.

*************

We can’t even fix our own problems here at home but try to manage everyone else’s around the world.

We need to stay out of it, let Israel help the Druze secure the South, permanently, and end Trump’s bromance with Ergodan, who wants all of Syria to be part of the New Caliphate.

If the Biden team were in power, they would take this as an opportunity to push more LGBQT+ crap into Syria.

This subject did come up back then. Was it GAZPROM obstructing a pipeline, or Ukraine, more or less totally dependent on transit fee, that influenced the EU to hint they would not buy gas from that source if it was going to undercut Ukraine’s transit revenue. That hint was sufficient to evaporate desires for the Iraq portion of the route. Qatar never volunteered to pay for the construction. It was to be the EU.

The latter was generally accepted (that transit fees were the motivation), and largely this was part of the precedent for Nordstream and its destruction. Ukraine transit fee was the source of a lot of corruption, including bribes in the EU to get them to take this action.

Regardless of the details, the overall concept is to accept that oil and gas are everything. Europe has nearly none, just like Japan.

Syria is made up of distinct cultures that don’t get along. Arabs are insane anyway. Let them separate.
