Sotheby's famed auction room was filled with gasps followed by shocked silence after an iconic statue priced far too ambitiously failed to sell at auction.
Billionaires descended on the New York City event on Tuesday in the hope of snagging a masterpiece created by the likes of Picasso, Monet or Matisse.
But it was Alberto Giacometti's 1955 bronze bust, called Grand tête mince, that was billed as the auction's centerpiece by experts who gave it a $70 million guide price.

I saw that. Well worth the time and some really good violin music.

Humper Biden could do better than that, since he’s a true artist. And a few years ago, his work could easily have brought $70 million.
But today, it would be worth only a few bucks from a scrap metal dealer.

It is just nouveau riche greed. In the old days main line auction houses like Sotheby’s would set auction estimates rediculously low so as to entice bidders who thought they had a chance at a bargain.

Money laundering. Whoever pays those millions can then borrow against it. It would be a shame if something happened to it after the buyer got it insured.

Further evidence that high-priced auctions are for money laundering, especially for “art” that looks essentially worthless. The comments at the link said essentially the same thing.
I never thought of that reason for atrociously priced *art* but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
I also heard that many objects on eBay that are exorbitantly priced are also for the purpose of money laundering.
