Humper Biden could do better than that, since he’s a true artist. And a few years ago, his work could easily have brought $70 million.
But today, it would be worth only a few bucks from a scrap metal dealer.

It is just nouveau riche greed. In the old days main line auction houses like Sotheby’s would set auction estimates rediculously low so as to entice bidders who thought they had a chance at a bargain.

Further evidence that high-priced auctions are for money laundering, especially for “art” that looks essentially worthless. The comments at the link said essentially the same thing.
I never thought of that reason for atrociously priced *art* but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
I also heard that many objects on eBay that are exorbitantly priced are also for the purpose of money laundering.
