Flasback to 2016: Why Cheap Gas Might Not Be Good For The U.S. Economy from NPR
NPR ^ | January 28, 2016. Yes, it's a flashback.

Posted on 05/14/2025 10:00:09 PM PDT by NoLibZone

Happy times are here again at the gas pump. The price of oil keeps falling, and Americans are filling their tanks for less than $2 a gallon. The government says cheaper gasoline put an extra $100 billion into drivers' wallets last year alone.

That seems like it would be good for the economy. Turns out, it might not be.

"Is it possible that lower oil prices could actually hurt the U.S. economy?" asks Vipin Arora, an economist with the U.S. Energy Information Administration. "I think the answer could be yes."

Arora's findings are based on his own research, so this isn't the government's official word on the matter. But his research suggests that cheap gas might be bad for America.

Democrats suffer from dysphoria.

They oppose lower taxes, lower food, prices, lower energy prices, lower prescription drug prices.

If tomorrow Trump was able to make the average home cost $100,000 Democrats heads would explode in anger

When I saw that the source was NPR, I almost skipped this post. However, I decided to see just how messed up it was.

What I dislike most about most of the liberal left media is their bias and spin.

If NPR used such a reverse perspective to explain how wonderful everything Trump did they would probably commit corporate suicide. They should try it for 6 months just to see how much the things Trump does that make sense and are actually reasonable with little bias or spin.

Now for the article, what they are implying is that the secondary jobs associated with oil exploration and crude oil transportation are a more significant component to the economy, than the general transportation sector. That is just not the case.

Furthermore, you have States (Soviets) like Washington that just passed a huge gas tax increase and you have California that has just driven out a major oil refinery that will dramatically decrease the supply (and hence increase the price) of gasoline and diesel in that state.

The article can be best described as a “half truth” that does not truly show the impact that lower fuel prices will have on goods delivered to grocery stores, delivery products to brick and mortar stores and to mail order shopping. As usual, NPR is lost in its own bias trying to knock down a success of Trump.

THIS type of propaganda is why their funding needs to be yanked.

Now is a good time to refill the Strategic Oil Reserves which Biden squandered to stave off defeat in the mid terms. If ever there was a Biden policy that needs to be investigated, selling oil to Red China from SOR is at the top of the list.

“I think the answer could be yes.” They never commit, always use words like “could”, or “maybe”, or “quite possibly”, which really means they don’t know. If it could be, then it could also not be, since “could” is not definite. Wingnuts.

CNN is running all kinds of similar stories. As prices fall or at least fail to climb they will look to spin their ignorance.

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/05/12/business/car-prices-tariffs-recession-economy

“Despite tariffs, car prices aren’t shooting up. That’s not necessarily a good thing”

They are a sad bunch.

Exactly, pure garbage.

The Sun ‘could’ blow up tomorrow...but my math might be wrong.

It doesn’t deserve airtime, but ‘Trump bad’ just overrides any logic.

The hallmark of prosperity is low ENERGY costs. If transporting goods is cheaper, then free markets will lower consumer prices. If electricity costs are lower, the cost of doing everything else becomes cheaper.

All evidence points to cheap gas being GOOD...it frees up consumer cash for other things, as though that is bad!

SMDH.

NPR doesn’t like cheap fossil fuels of any kind because burning them causes more CO2. That’s the root of this silly idea.

NPR apparently found “Arron” from the US energy information agency (eia.gov) and is hoping that no one looks up eia.gov to find out exactly what that agency does and reports.

A big factor in US domestic energy costs is our petroleum exports. The US exports refined petroleum products every day and is measured in MBD (millions of barrels per day).

Currently national news has been that domestic crude oil prices have been falling to below the break-point for new well production which will mean lay-offs in the US oil fields.

Okay, crude oil prices have decreased so why is the pump price of gasoline and diesel increasing? The answer is that exports of refined petroleum products have increased thus decreasing domestic supply and propping up higher retail prices.

Sometimes in recorded market history, US oil companies were not able to sell what they would like to the European and Asian markets due their own economic downturn thus reducing demand.

The reports of eia.gov tells a lot about our domestic pricing and the economic health/decline of European/asian markets.

Energy costs are the inflation of every product on the planet. The higher the energy costs, the higher EVERYTHING else will cost.

The main reason the US economy was so good for decades above Europe was our low energy costs. Europe foolishly taxed the crap out of their energy and it lowered their productivity and made everything higher in costs...
