NPR, Truth, and Public Funding
New American Prophet ^ | May 8, 2025 | Dr. Jerry Newcombe

Posted on 05/08/2025 7:07:33 AM PDT by Rev M. Bresciani

President Trump has repeated his call to defund PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and NPR (National Public Radio).

Under the First Amendment, PBS and NPR certainly have the right to free expression, but must the American taxpayers be forced to fund them? From a Christian and conservative perspective, they are heavily biased broadcasters.

OK so what percentage of their funding comes from the taxpayers? Doubt it’s much but on principal it’s the right thing to do.

One wonders to what degree they will become MORE biased once the government sets them free.

There’s multiple principles in play here. Bias is one of them, but in all honesty, that takes a back seat to the Constitutional question, as there is no provision whereby the Government would/should create its own media outlet.

At best, it becomes a mouthpiece for the Government (as it has been under Leftist administrations), and therefore isn’t a true journalism source. At worst... well, I think we’re seeing the worst: it’s a source of anti-government, anti-American propaganda masked as journalism.

But here’s the bottom line for me: as the Bill of Rights carves out a freedom for the press, why is it the business of the Government to create an arm of the press? It should be the same principle as the prohibition of the Federal Government from creating a religion.

They can say whatever they want if they are independent. So cut ‘em loose.

That is the idea. Let them show their real colors WITHOUT the authority of the US government behind them. Then they become MSNBC and treated accordingly.

Like someone said, they are nothing but a propaganda outlet for the radical left. IF the radical left want to keep it going then they can pay for it- the public should not be forced to pay for radical liberal ideology especially when 1000’s of other stations don’t get ANY money from gov funding! The left can support it all they like- don’t use my tax dollars to fund an anti American site like npr. (Yes i know, tax dollars go to fund all kinds of radical crap- not happy about those either!)

I wonder if it is possible to strip them of their name when cutting them loose. They'll otherwise cling to their current imprimatur, hawking government authority and supposed objectivity.

"...From a Christian and conservative perspective, they are heavily biased broadcasters..."

Minor correction: "From an Christian and conservative ethical and honest perspective, they are heavily biased broadcasters."

That is the excuse some dumb Republicans have used in the past. Just defund them. Now!

No wonder PBS has stepped up their fund raising efforts lately.

We listen to a Catholic radio station in Ct. and it has several radiothons a year in order to keep broadcasting. As far as I know the Govt. sends no money to support them. We like the oldies that they play so we send checks to them. They supply a service that we are willing to pay to listen to and so should any radio or TV station. No tax dollars for any of them, let the people who like them pay.

I think the NPR, CPB, PBS, agencies have had a good run and used the US Gov. as an incubator. And indeed they have promoted some good things.

Now they should go public with an IPO and I bet they would do fine.

They have all the Sesame Street stuff and tons of lib Communists would make a point of supporting them by buying their stock.

Grow a spine, guys, and cut the cord. You can make it on your own.
