The Ukrainian Kursk adventure was one of the biggest mistakes in a long line of military blunders and miss allocation of resources by the Ukraine.

Now they seem to be doubling down on failure

This will not end well.

It was far from a mistake with Ukraine seizing the initiative, capturing significant territory (up to 1,250 km² at its peak) and holding the Sudzha pocket for seven months, disrupting Russian plans, preventing a Russian offensive into Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast and forcing Russia to divert elite units from Donbas to Kursk.

The operation humiliated the Kremlin, exposing vulnerabilities in Russia’s border defenses—the first foreign invasion of Russian soil since World War II. This dented Putin’s strongman image and shifted the global narrative from Ukrainian retreat to audacious offense.

The operation achieved some of its aims: boosting morale, diverting Russian resources, and shifting the war’s narrative.
