This turbulence is on the ground.
United Airlines cut 35 daily round-trip flights at Newark Liberty International Airport Friday, citing Federal Aviation Administration technology failures and staffing issues that resulted in five days of excessive delays — including one flight from Boston that was set back more than five hours.
The cancellations — which are about 10% of the carrier’s service at the major East Coast airport — starts this weekend. The move comes after nearly one-quarter of all FAA air traffic controllers for Newark Airport (EWR) “walked off the job” this week due to malfunctioning technology, further compounding chronic understaffing that has the agency now issuing a Ground Delay for the gridlocked New York City airport.
“It’s disappointing to make further cuts to an already reduced schedule at Newark, but since there is no way to resolve the near-term structural FAA staffing issues, we feel like there is no other choice in order to protect our customers,” United CEO Scott Kirby wrote in a message to customers Friday.
“In the past few days, on more than one occasion, technology that FAA air traffic controllers rely on to manage the airplanes coming in and out of Newark airport failed — resulting in dozens of diverted flights, hundreds of delayed and canceled flights and worst of all, thousands of customers with disrupted travel plans,” he added.
The technology issues caused “over 20% of the FAA controllers for EWR” to walk off the job, Kirby stated.

FAA To Move Air Traffic Control For Newark Airspace To Philadelphia To Alleviate Congestion
Relocating control of the Newark, New Jersey airspace is set to address current challenges with staffing and congested air traffic above New York City. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted this Wednesday that control of Newark airspace will be transferred to Philadelphia ahead of a record summer travel season.
Struggles around air traffic control staffing issues noted that the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) had signed a memorandum to allow relocation of control from Newark, which is currently controlled by the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control, to the Philadelphia Tower by this coming June.

I’m sure the FAA can find Didn’t Earn It (DEI) hires who can make it all work.
Scott Kirby is a leftist pervert. He was handed the reins of an airline poised for greatness and turned it into a morass of DEI mediocrity.
He should follow the example of Boeing, Caterpillar, Citadel, Tyson Foods, TTX and others and move the headquarters out of Chicago. Leaving Houston for Chicago only made sense for one reason, Obama. The new Continental/United merger needed DOJ, DOT, and SEC approval. Obama provided that in record time.

I fly every week or so for work. Something is happening in the airline world. Prices recently skyrocketed and flight schedules have been reduced. Something’s up.
Funny you should mention Newark airport. We were there only once & this was years ago, but we were delayed there for weather, got a voucher for a hotel room. Got to the hotel, told there were no vacancies, so we spent the night in the terminal. No reimbusement for any of this. It was about that that time that thereafter, we never flew again.
