Ruth Buzzi, who was so hilarious as the lonely spinster Gladys Ormphby, the lady who swung her handbag as a lethal weapon, on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, has died. She was 88.
Buzzi died Thursday night in her sleep at her home in Texas, her family announced. In July 2022, her husband, actor Kent Perkins, revealed that she was “bedridden and incapacitated” after suffering a seres of strokes.
Buzzi appeared in the original Broadway production of the musical comedy Sweet Charity, played Marlo Thomas’ pal Margie “Pete” Peterson on ABC’s That Girl, starred opposite Jim Nabors on a Saturday morning kids show, The Lost Saucer, and spent many years on Sesame Street.

Definately a part of my 1970’s-80’s memories.
She and Artie Johnson were so funny together!! May she RIP.
A comedy genius!
RIP
One of my favorites on Laugh-In
I always wondered if they based that on Benny Hill.
Awaiting the Supreme Court references…
RIP
Jennifer Rubin is the new Ruth Buzzi.
Ditto that.
Is she the one who leaned conservative?
Laugh In was a little before my time, but I’ve enjoyed watching bits from it (and certainly ones with her). She seemed like a very nice person in real life, RIP.
RIP. You and Arte Johnson (Tyrone F. Horneigh) were #1. Thanks for all the laughs you gave me. You were one of the great ones.
watched laugh in as a kid, a show that was very political in a fun way. They even got John Wayne and Richard Nixon to appear. Back when humor was funny, not mean spirited. I liked Ruth Buzzi, Joann Worley, and Goldie Hawn. Especially when they danced with the body painted slogans. Rip Ruth Buzzi , Your laughs are for the ages.
One of the funniest was when she and Don Rickles, he dressed as a woman got into a fight over the old man on the park bench.
Again, proving that men who dressed as women did it for laughs as clowns. Today those clowns want to be taken serious.
I wrote this on “X” and got a notice it “went against community standards”. With all the semi-nudes on “X” I did not know “X” had standards!
In July 2022, her husband, actor Kent Perkins, revealed that she was “bedridden and incapacitated” after suffering a seres of strokes....
Very sad...and, very suspicious timing.
RIP Funny Girl
One ringee-dingee...
That was Lily Tomlin.
