Police shot and killed a death metal pioneer in San Francisco this week after an argument with a neighbor over tree clippings turned violent.
Brian Montana, 60, guitarist for the band Possessed, died in a shootout with cops after he pulled a gun on a neighbor during an argument...
One neighbor sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shootout, during which Montana took cover behind parked cars and landscaping and used three different guns to shoot at cops for almost half an hour, according to authorities, per CBS Bay Area.
“[Montana] fired multiple times at officers using a handgun, shotgun, and rifle … Officers used patrol cars as cover and returned fire. The suspect was struck and ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene,” SSFPD said.
Montana is the second member of the band to be shot.
Its vocalist Jeff Becerra was shot twice in a 1989 robbery that left him paralyzed from the waist down...

I saw Possessed in SF at The Kabuki way back in the day - 1985-ish. I can’t remember who they were opening for.
Montana wasn’t on this band’s debut album; he played on a song called “Swing Of The Axe” on the Metal Massacre VI compilation. Larry Lalonde, more famously of Primus, played on the debut.
I re-watch the 5 seasons of that every once in awhile.. (I have it on my server)

I had a boyfriend who was a bass player in a death metal band. After one of their shows, I gave him a thorough review of the iambic pentameter in their lyrics. “It’s Shakespearean... it goes “Raaagh for 1-2-3-4-5, then Blaah 1 and Wraaaa 2 and Gaaah 3 and Raaaaagh for 4-——5; etc.” I think he fell in love with me then.
